Grow Your Career with an Industry Leader
The Shop Supervisor is an experienced, hands-on diesel mechanic and shop leader who leads the branch shop and supports the Fleet Manager in maintaining a fleet of heavy diesel trucks, diesel-powered heavy equipment, and gasoline and hybrid vehicles. This role takes ownership of daily shop operations, builds and develops a capable team of technicians, and raises standards for organization, inspection quality, compliance, and shop performance. The Shop Manager performs and guides technical work, follows through on priorities, and independently manages daily shop operations when the Fleet Manager is away, within established company policies and approval limits.
What You'll Do:
Shop Leadership and Team Development
- Take ownership of the shop’s condition, workflow, workmanship, and results. Establish clear expectations for a clean, organized, safe, and productive workplace.
- Plan and assign daily work across shop shifts and field service calls. Match assignments to technician skills, monitor progress, and adjust priorities to support field operations.
- Build and grow the technician team with the Fleet Manager through recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, coaching, and performance feedback. Develop technician skills through hands-on instruction and planned training.
- Lead by example as a working technical leader across heavy diesel trucks, diesel-powered heavy equipment, and gasoline and hybrid vehicles. Diagnose complex problems, assist with repairs, and verify completed work meets company standards.
Maintenance and Inspection Quality
- Coordinate preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and field service to minimize downtime. Generate and manage work orders, order parts promptly, and communicate repair status and expected completion dates.
- Oversee timely completion of applicable DOT and California BIT inspections, including 90-day and annual inspections. Track due dates, plan work in advance, and escalate scheduling risks before inspections become overdue.
- Verify inspections are thorough and accurately documented, reported defects are addressed, and safety concerns are resolved before equipment returns to service. Maintain complete repair and inspection records and support audits and corrective actions.
- Work with Safety and the Fleet Manager to maintain safe shop, yard, and field service practices. Coordinate quarterly equipment maintenance and safety training with field personnel.
Shop Organization and Performance
- Improve shop layout, housekeeping, tool control, parts storage, and inventory accuracy. Maintain appropriate supplies of filters, tires, oils, small tools, and other regularly used items.
- Review shop costs, technician productivity, work order turnaround, preventive maintenance timeliness, inspection completion, and repeat repairs with the Fleet Manager. Identify causes of poor performance and implement practical improvements.
- Use Fleetio, GPS systems, and related applications to maintain accurate records, monitor assigned compliance targets, and identify issues requiring follow-up.
- Support the Fleet Manager with staffing needs, repair recommendations, vendor coordination, cost control, and shop improvement plans. Provide clear updates on workload, downtime, compliance concerns, and team performance.
- Negotiate competitive parts and service pricing, maintain vendor relationships, and establish vendor accounts within company procedures. Issue purchase orders, maintain logs, and review, code, and submit invoices to accounts payable.
- Submit daily and weekly shop timesheets accurately and on time. Attend branch and department meetings and support special projects requested by branch leadership.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervise shop technicians and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws. Partner with the Fleet Manager and Human Resources on hiring, performance evaluations, recognition, discipline, employee concerns, and staffing decisions. Set expectations, assign work, hold employees accountable, and develop technicians for greater responsibility.
Qualifications and Experience we are looking for:
- High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, technical training, and experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing both heavy diesel trucks and diesel-powered heavy equipment. - Experience as a lead technician, shop foreman, supervisor, or comparable working leader, including coordinating work, coaching technicians, and taking responsibility for shop results.
- Working knowledge of DOT vehicle maintenance and inspection requirements and/or California’s Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) program. Experience maintaining inspection records, preparing for audits, and correcting deficiencies is strongly preferred.
- Ability to organize a shop, manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment, and maintain daily operations without continuous oversight.
- Proficiency with fleet maintenance software, GPS systems, mobile applications, spreadsheets, email, and work order documentation; Fleetio experience preferred.
