Position Summary:

We are seeking an exceptionalInpatient Palliative Care Social Worker to join a highly expert, high-functioning interdisciplinary team dedicated to outstanding care for patients with serious illness and their families.

The social worker in this role will serve as a behavior health expert on the team, providing expert psychosocial assessment, counseling, and support for hospitalized patients with serious illness and their families. The successful candidate will be a skilled clinician who thrives in complex clinical environments, values interdisciplinary partnership, and is committed to advancing the field of palliative care through education and mentorship. The successful candidate will report to the Chief of the Division of Palliative Medicine and the Senior Administrative Manager of NYU Palliative Medicine Associates.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides inpatient palliative consultation service and providing specialty-level palliative social work support to the hospital. Provides cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, anticipatory guidance, and legacy work to mitigate suffering and enhance the cognitive and emotional integration of the adaptations that serious illness demands.
  • Interdisciplinary Pain and Symptom Management - multidimensional assessment of pain and other symptoms, expertise in non-pharmacological interventions for pain and symptoms related to advanced illness, inquiring about the attributed meaning, spiritual aspects, cultural variables, hopelessness, helplessness, associated mood aspects, providing psycho education, teaching relaxation, reframing, imagery, working with caregiver distress.
  • Care Coordination Across Practice Settings - provides continuity between hospital service and outpatient palliative practice; extensive collaboration with case management, liaison for hospice representatives, expert anticipatory guidance for patients and families re-illness progression.
  • GME Faculty Member/Education - provides education across disciplines (medical students, house staff, fellows, nursing, social work, attending level physicians), palliative care social work interns and community wide work.
  • Strategic Development Division Wide responsible for organizing and directing the palliative service interdisciplinary team, developing a palliative social work strategic plan within the Division, building a palliative care social work presence within the organization.
  • Providing specialty-level palliative social work expertise on various institutional committees and programs, including the Bioethics Committee.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Master's Degree in Social Work Required. Current and valid New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license OR Current and valid New York State Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) license Required. Completion of a post graduate Social Work Fellowship Required. Completion of certificate program in Palliative Care within first two years of employment Required. 1-2 Years Social work in a health care setting or social service agency
Social work in a clinical setting Required. Strong working knowledge of clinical social work practice, relevant medical and/or legal issues that impact patient care, and medical center resources to access and provide for patient care needs Required. Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, assessment, counseling, multitasking, detail orientation, and organizational skills Required. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office especially Word, Excel, and Powerpoint Required..

Required Licenses: Licensed Social Worker - NYS

Preferred Qualifications:
ACHP-SW (if certified, professional certifications below not required) Preferred. 1-2 years In Palliative Medicine or hospice care - unless post graduate fellowship trained Preferred.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $112,079.10 - $122,225.21 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
