    Job Description

AWS Security"s Security Communications (SecComms) team builds and operates the platforms, tools, and systems that enable Amazon"s security organization to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at scale. We support security events, ongoing security programs, vulnerability communications, and strategic initiatives that span multiple Amazon business units and AWS services. Our engineering products are the connective tissue between security findings, remediation owners, and the people responsible for keeping

    Amazon and its customers safe.

We are seeking a senior Software Development Engineer to lead the design, development, and operation of software systems that power security communications workflows, automation, and integrations at scale. This role is for a technical leader who brings engineering rigor to ambiguous problems where the business need is understood but the technology strategy is not yet defined, who owns outcomes across system boundaries, and who thrives working across organizational boundaries with security engineers, program managers, and communications professionals. You will own the architectural direction of the SecComms platform, lead projects staffed by multiple engineers, and act as a force multiplier for the team.

Security Communications serves as the engineering and operations hub for AWS-related security messaging, stakeholder notification, and communications tooling across the organization. Our team is responsible for building scalable platforms that enable consistent, reliable, and timely communication during high-severity security events, coordinated vulnerability disclosure, and routine security program operations. We are a cross-functional team - engineers work shoulder-to-shoulder with communications professionals, security operations personnel, AWS service owners, and executives. Candidates should be comfortable leading discussions and building consensus in this environment across both technical and non-technical domains.

    Key job responsibilities

    Design & Delivery

    • Own the architecture and technical direction of major systems within the SecComms platform, leading delivery across the full lifecycle - product strategy, scoping, architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
    • Work backwards from customer and stakeholder needs to define requirements, then define the technology strategy to meet them where none yet exists, translating ambiguity into well-designed, extensible software.
    • Solve complex problems with multiple risks and roadblocks using solutions that are as simple as possible, both directly and by directing the work of other engineers, and explain those problems to others in simple, concise terms.
    • Balance constraints across new feature development, technical debt, and operational reliability; identify one-way-door decisions and advocate for the right long-term solution rather than short-term workarounds.
    • Produce exemplary, well-tested, documented code that sets the standard others emulate and adheres to the Amazon Code Bar.

    Operational Excellence

    • Lead ongoing operational support for the team with appropriate alarms, telemetry, runbooks, and on-call response; effectively prioritize trade-offs between operational improvements and other work.
    • Drive resolution of the root causes of operational issues and address systemic issues that reduce support costs across the team"s services.
    • Take the lead in identifying and solving architecture deficiencies and areas where software bottlenecks innovation, including in systems you depend on but do not own.
    • Ensure software failures are addressed with permanent fixes that prevent recurring incidents.

    Collaboration & Cross-Functional Partnership

    • Partner with security engineers, program managers, communications leads, and adjacent teams to understand the business and customer value of the team"s software, and influence the roadmaps and technical decisions of teams you depend on but don"t control.
    • Build consensus and make an inclusive space for differing views when integrations, dependencies, or shared priorities arise across organizational boundaries.
    • Make effective priority trade-offs between feature development and operational work, prioritizing long-term results - software quality, business requirements, customer experience, and maintainability - across your team"s and related teams" products.
    • Communicate technical designs and decisions clearly in writing to both technical audiences and to non-technical stakeholders and leadership.

    Mentorship & Engineering Culture

    • Actively coach or mentor multiple engineers, on your team and beyond; serve as someone members of other teams seek out for expertise.
    • Drive adoption of engineering best practices across the team; train new team members on how the SecComms software is constructed, tested, operated, and secured, and how it fits into the broader Amazon Security architecture.
    • Own and maintain documentation of what the team"s software does, how it is built, and how it connects to the bigger picture; keep it current as systems evolve.
    • Seek diverse perspectives and feedback early, and proactively identify and drive adoption of industry innovations including new tools, design patterns, and AWS capabilities to ensure the team"s skills keep pace.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
