    Job Description

Do you want to help lead the cloud revolution and build software that thrives at immense scale?

AWS Elastic Load Balancing(ELB) enables customers to build large scale highly available services. ELB automatically distributes incoming application traffic across multiple targets, such as Amazon EC2 instances, containers, IP addresses, and Lambda functions. ELB provides the entry point for building hyper scale, fault tolerant applications. While ELB has seen tremendous growth since launch we are still in the early stages of realizing our full potential.

As a Software Development Manager for the Network Load Balancer (NLB) and Gateway Load Balancer (GWLB) control plane team, you will be responsible for leading a group of talented engineers in the ongoing mission to empower ELB Control Plane and ELB Customers to react quickly and accurately on ELB runtime dynamics. We are doing so by building an array of micro-services that process extremely large volume of raw, partial and transitory data collected by ELB Data Plane instruments, and transform such data into valuable information and insights, which can be easily utilized by ELB Control Plane as well as ELB customers to make critical runtime system adjustments. We grow with our customers, and you will be leading to make that a reality. You will have an opportunity to effect change and impact for all of AWS. This is an exciting problem space that is just getting started.

A successful candidate is experienced in leading a team of deeply technical engineers. You, the candidate, must have proven skills as a leader that delivers on business objectives, prioritizes work, and influences partner teams. You will establish goals for your team and focus attention on the most important inputs to drive the desired business outcomes. You know how to grow the team by hiring, investing in people, and developing talent from within. ELB operates at large scale and enables customers to build high availability systems world-wide, so a passion and discipline around operational excellence is key. Come help us make history with ELB.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead and manage a team of software engineers building and operating AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) services at massive scale
    • Drive technical strategy, architecture decisions, and roadmap planning for ELB features and reliability improvements
    • Hire, develop, and retain top engineering talent; conduct performance reviews, career coaching, and mentorship
    • Own operational excellence - ensure high availability, low latency, and security for one of AWS"s most critical networking services
    • Partner cross-functionally with product management, principal engineers, and partner teams to define and deliver customer-focused solutions
    • Manage sprint planning, project prioritization, and delivery execution across multiple concurrent workstreams
    • Establish and raise the engineering bar through code reviews, design reviews, and best practices adoption
    • Drive operational metrics, on-call processes, and incident response to maintain industry-leading SLAs
    • Communicate effectively with senior leadership on team progress, risks, and strategic trade-offs
    • Foster a culture of innovation, ownership, and continuous improvement aligned with Amazon"s Leadership Principles

    About the team

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
