Description

Spatial Front, Inc. (SFI), a two-time USAToday Top Workplaces awardee and Washington Top Workplaces honoree, is seeking a results-driven Backend Software Engineer to support a high-visibility federal program focused on modernizing data-driven processes that evaluate vehicle safety performance. This role supports the development and maintenance of scalable, secure web applications and APIs that power a mission-critical data platform used by government stakeholders and external partners.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative engineer with strong backend development experience, a passion for clean and maintainable code, and comfort working in Agile and DevSecOps environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and architect backend software applications supporting a modern, data-centric platform
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize scalable, high-performance applications using Node.js
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs and integrate with external data sources
  • Implement reusable, modular components and support state management strategies
  • Perform unit and end-to-end testing using tools such as Postman
  • Participate in peer code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices
  • Collaborate closely with senior engineers, UI/UX designers, QA teams, and stakeholders in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including system design, APIs, and workflows
  • Support CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field

OR

  • Six (6) years of equivalent professional experience in place of a degree

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a backend Software Engineer
  • Proficiency with Node.js, RESTful APIs, GitHub, AWS, and API Gateway
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum and DevSecOps environments
  • Hands-on experience with Jira and Confluence
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Public Trust clearance (fingerprinting required)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing APIs using Node.js and Express
  • Familiarity with AWS services such as S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, and API Gateway
  • Exposure to Docker and container orchestration tools like Kubernetes
  • Understanding of application security best practices, including OAuth and JWT
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Prior experience supporting federal government projects

Additional Information

  • Clearance: Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

  • Work Environment: Flexible/remote, with occasional on-site support as needed.
  • Salary Range: $80,000 - $130,000 annually
