DESCRIPTION

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill two (2) full-time positions in the class of

Solid Waste Attendant in the Integrated Waste Management Division of the Department of Community Services.

THE POSITION

This positions is located at the Yolo County Central Landfill. Under general supervision, a Solid Waste Attendant performs responsible cashiering work at the landfill and transfer stations in accordance with division and County cash management guidelines; estimates, collects and accounts for disposal fees; safeguards and accounts for receipts; directs traffic to appropriate waste disposal locations; inspects disposal loads for hazardous materials; inspects and collects paint and other hazardous materials; prepares and participates in periodic load checking of incoming refuse, and examines these loads for unacceptable materials; approves and rejects such loads depending on their content; performs other related duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate for this position has a combination of physical, technical, and customer service skills. They are willing and able to perform various physical tasks in the landfill environment, efficiently handle cash transactions, maintain records and operate office equipment, effectively interact with the public, and regularly operate industrial equipment / hardware (such as a scale, forklift, gates, signal lights, etc.).

Please note, employees in this position:

  • Perform considerable work inside as well as outside;
  • Work closely with others, and may perform considerable work on sometimes slippery and uneven surfaces;
  • Are required to drive a vehicle, and can expect to be exposed to dust, sun, cold weather, grease and oils;
  • May work around heavy equipment and other objects and vehicles; and
  • Are required to stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, frequent lifting of objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds and occasional lifting of objects up to fifty (50) pounds.

The landfill is open to the public and a seven (7) day per week operation. The weekly work schedule for this position consists of forty (40) hours of work and may include any day of the week, typically including at least one or both weekend days. The current standard work shift for this position is 6:15AM to 4:45PM, a "4/10 Schedule," four (4) workdays consisting of ten (10) hours scheduled on each workday, OR 8:15AM to 4:45PM, a "5/8 Schedule," five (5) workdays consisting of eight (8) hours scheduled on each workday.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications required for a candidate to proceed in the selection process are as follows:

  • Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade; AND

  • Experience: One (1) year of general experience assessing solid waste, collecting fees from the public, performing data recordkeeping, or work closely related to the duties (see the class specification "Essential Functions") of the Solid Waste Attendant classification; AND

  • License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California drivers license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.
