Southwest Prevention VISTA

At Weber Human Services, we are dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. We focus on skill building for individuals, families, institutions, and organizations. Our AmeriCorps VISTA project is aimed to impact low income communities and ultimately prevent poverty in our area. By preventing substance use we can address the conditions that shape the health and opportunities in our community. We know poverty can increase stress, instability and exposure to risk factors while substance use can contribute to unemployment, debt, housing instability and family strain. By strengthening protective factors and reducing risk factors in our community, we can prevent both substance use and the cycle of poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA members can help us reach this goal by strengthening our coalition''s ability to address community risk and protective factors. Member Duties : VISTA members will collaborate with local youth and adult prevention coalitions to build capacity for evidence based prevention efforts. They will create coalition engagement tools, planning resources and materials to raise community awareness. VISTA members will develop and lead data collection and evaluation processes to measure project and strategy impact, identify local trends and create tools that can be utilized after the VISTA term. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public health, community organizing, and non-profit management while earning an AmeriCorps Education Award.
