About This Role
We are seeking an experienced Interim SOX Auditor to support the execution of SOX compliance activities for a large, publicly traded, global organization.
This consulting opportunity will focus on evaluating the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR), performing SOX testing, documenting findings, and supporting remediation efforts across multiple business units and corporate functions.
Working closely with SOX leadership, Corporate Accounting, Internal Audit, and external auditors, the consultant will play an important role in maintaining audit readiness, ensuring accurate compliance documentation, and supporting the organization's ongoing SOX 404 requirements.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on SOX professional with strong accounting knowledge, experience testing business process controls, and the ability to work independently within a complex public company environment.
This position focuses on financial reporting and business process controls, NOT IT SOX or IT General Controls (ITGC).
What You Will Work On
SOX Compliance & Control Testing
- Execute SOX 404 compliance activities across designated business units, subsidiaries, and corporate functions.
- Perform walkthroughs and evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting.
- Conduct detailed control testing, assess supporting documentation, and identify potential control deficiencies
- Prepare clear, accurate, and audit-ready testing workpapers in accordance with established SOX methodologies
- Support annual SOX planning, risk assessments, control scoping, and testing schedules
- Track testing progress, findings, and outstanding documentation to ensure compliance deadlines are met.
Financial & Business Process Controls
- Evaluate controls related to key accounting and financial reporting processes, including general ledger, financial close, reconciliations, and other applicable business cycles
- Partner with control owners to understand business processes, assess risks, and validate the effectiveness of existing controls
- Review control documentation, process narratives, risk and control matrices, and supporting evidence for completeness and accuracy
- Identify gaps in control design or execution and communicate findings to SOX leadership and business stakeholders.
- Execute remediation testing to confirm that corrective actions have addressed previously identified control deficiencies.
Audit Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with Corporate Accounting, Finance, Operations, and Internal Audit teams to support SOX compliance objectives.
- Coordinate with external auditors to respond to documentation requests, clarify testing results, and resolve audit inquiries.
- Participate in internal audit activities and workpaper reviews as needed.
- Communicate testing status, identified risks, and remediation progress to SOX management.
- Develop effective working relationships with stakeholders across multiple levels of the organization.
Documentation, Reporting & Process Improvement
- Maintain SOX testing documentation, audit evidence, and compliance records within established audit management systems.
- Monitor open testing items, audit findings, and remediation activities to support timely resolution.
- Assist in preparing compliance status updates and reporting for SOX leadership.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen financial controls, streamline testing procedures, and improve documentation quality.
- Support special projects involving accounting controls, financial reporting processes, and broader internal control improvements.
What You Will Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- 5+ years of progressive experience in SOX compliance, internal audit, public accounting, or financial controls.
- Hands-on experience executing SOX 404 testing within a publicly traded company or public accounting environment.
- Strong knowledge of internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR), SOX requirements, and financial accounting processes.
- Experience performing control walkthroughs, evaluating control design and operating effectiveness, documenting testing results, and identifying deficiencies.
- Familiarity with COSO internal control principles and SEC reporting requirements.
- Experience working with SOX compliance or audit management systems.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to evaluate complex accounting processes and supporting documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare thorough, accurate, and audit-ready workpapers.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to engage Finance, Accounting, and Operations stakeholders at various organizational levels.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple testing priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently, quickly become familiar with existing control environments, and contribute immediately in an interim consulting capacity.
Preferred Qualifications (not required)
- Big 4 or other public accounting firm experience.
