    The Space Planner provides planning, design and limited project management for new program spaces, department relocation, small- and medium-scale building renovations and, occasionally, new construction. The position facilitates and manages projects from initial programming and conceptual design through project budgeting and scheduling, and, when necessary, solicitation of licensed professionals to proceed with the building permit, design development and construction processes. The Planner also is responsible for analyzing space data, managing space use and utilization studies, and updating space standards and guidelines.

    Description Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 6 or more years' experience or combination of education and experience Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    • Bachelor's degree or technical certification related to architecture, interior design, construction management, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Five to seven years in planning, designing, and facilitation design and construction projects
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
    • Proficient with design and/or construction software, such as AutoCad, Revit, and SketchUp

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with a broad variety of higher education design environments
    • Ability to negotiate and resolve confrontational issues as they arise

    Key Accountabilities

    Description

    Space Planning Projects

    • Meet with client(s) to develop and document programming requirements
    • Identify space options and determine required renovations/changes to the space
    • Document proposed scope of work, including project schedule, budget, and phasing
    • Prepare presentation materials to include floorplan options, furnishings, finish concepts, and other materials to communicate conceptual design
    • Ensure funding is allocated for proposed renovations
    • Manage transition of projects to Project Management for execution
    • May manage the design team selection process including preparation of RFQs and RFPs

    Percentage Of Time 50 Description

    Space Planning

    • Develops and manages space assessments including use and utilization of offices, classrooms, labs, and other campus spaces
    • Analyze space data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement
    • Work with consultants on special space studies to coordinate data collection, campus access, stakeholder input and to review deliverables for accuracy and alignment with needs
    • Translate assessment findings into practical recommendations to improve space efficiency and support planning decisions
    • Update and maintain college space standards

    Percentage Of Time 25 Description

    Project Management and Delivery

    • Document scope of work and secure local building permits, when required for small-scale projects
    • For medium-scale projects, solicit design team proposals through an RFQ and RFP process
    • Manage design team through construction documents process, serving as the conduit between internal stakeholders and external consultants
    • Manage construction and close-out of projects when required
