Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and monitoring specially designed instruction that supports the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional growth of students with disabilities across grade levels. This role ensures compliance with special education laws and procedures, collaborates with families and multidisciplinary teams, and fosters an inclusive, supportive learning environment that promotes student success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Provide specialized instruction aligned to student IEP goals and grade-level standards
  • Differentiate instruction and accommodations to meet diverse student learning needs
  • Monitor, document, and communicate student progress toward IEP goals
  • Conduct ongoing formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and interventions
  • Maintain a safe, structured, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families
  • Participate in case conferences, multidisciplinary meetings, and required professional development
  • Maintain accurate and timely records, including progress monitoring, service logs, attendance, and compliance documentation
  • Support students social-emotional, behavioral, communication, and functional development
  • Assist with behavior intervention plans, accommodations, and transition planning as appropriate
  • Advocate for equitable access to curriculum, services, and educational opportunities for students with disabilities

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Special Education or related field (required)
  • Valid state teaching license with Special Education certification/licensure (required)
  • Experience working with students with disabilities preferred
  • Knowledge of IDEA, Article 7, IEP development, and special education compliance requirements
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff
  • Commitment to inclusive practices and student-centered learning

Preferred Skills & Attributes

  • Experience developing and implementing IEPs
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction, intervention strategies, and behavior supports
  • Familiarity with a variety of disability categories and instructional approaches
  • Classroom management and de-escalation skills
  • Comfort using educational and assistive technology
  • Collaborative, flexible, and reflective teaching approach
  • Ability to work effectively with students across multiple grade levels and learning needs
