MRO Technician (Maintenance, Repair & Operations) Job Description

Position Title

MRO Technician (Maintenance, Repair & Operations Inventory Specialist)

Position Summary

The MRO Technician is responsible for the daily management, control, and optimization of maintenance spare parts inventory supporting facility, utility, and production maintenance operations. This role ensures the accurate storage, issuance, tracking, replenishment, and control of MRO materials while maintaining inventory accuracy, supporting planned maintenance activities, and collaborating with maintenance, engineering, procurement, warehouse, and vendor partners.

The MRO Technician serves as the primary point of contact for spare parts inventory management and material availability, ensuring maintenance teams have the right parts available at the right time to support reliability, uptime, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Inventory & Storeroom Operations

• Manage daily spare parts inventory activities including stocking, issuing, returning, and tracking materials.
• Receive and verify spare parts inventory into SAP following established inventory control procedures.
• Retrieve and process materials delivered through warehouse or loading dock operations.
• Maintain organized and accurate storage locations within the MRO storeroom.
• Ensure materials are properly labeled, identified, and stored according to established standards.
• Support material staging and kitting activities for scheduled maintenance work.
• Issue materials directly to maintenance technicians and process material returns to inventory.
• Maintain accurate documentation and transaction records for all inventory movements.

Inventory Management & Controls

• Perform cycle counts and physical inventory audits to maintain inventory accuracy targets.
• Reconcile inventory discrepancies and investigate root causes of variances.
• Monitor inventory levels, reorder points, and min/max settings.
• Manage inventory accuracy through real-time transaction processing and cycle counting practices.
• Identify and report excess, slow-moving, obsolete, and non-moving inventory.
• Administer SMOG (Slow Moving Obsolete Goods) processes and support inventory rationalization efforts.
• Coordinate blocked stock, scrap processes, and inventory disposition in accordance with finance and corporate requirements.
• Support inventory optimization initiatives while ensuring critical spare part availability.

SAP & Systems Management

• Execute inventory transactions and reporting within SAP.

• Utilize SAP inventory modules including:

• Material availability reviews (MMBE)

• Material master maintenance

• Material creation and updates

• Inventory transactions and stock management

• Work order verification and material planning support

• Support material master data creation and maintenance activities.

• Coordinate material master changes with global master data teams as required.

• Review maintenance work orders to understand future material demand and kitting requirements.

• Utilize inventory management tools, barcode scanning technology, spreadsheets, and procurement platforms as required.

• Support procurement and sourcing activities through SAP and Ariba systems.

Maintenance Support

• Support maintenance teams by ensuring timely availability of required spare parts and consumables.
• Coordinate material staging for upcoming preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
• Prepare maintenance kits for large scheduled jobs and shutdown activities.
• Review bills of materials (BOMs) and support maintenance planning activities.
• Collaborate with maintenance planners, engineers, and supervisors regarding material requirements and shortages.
• Assist in developing and maintaining spare parts strategies that support asset reliability objectives.

Procurement & Vendor Coordination

• Process material requisitions and support procurement workflows.
• Coordinate with buyers, suppliers, and vendors regarding material availability, discrepancies, and delivery issues.
• Research alternate materials and replacement parts when appropriate.
• Assist with supplier performance monitoring and material lead-time management.
• Support warranty claims, vendor returns, and replacement activities.

Quality & Returns Management

• Inspect incoming spare parts for accuracy, quality, and specification compliance.
• Document discrepancies and coordinate corrective actions with vendors and procurement teams.
• Process material returns and support nonconformance investigations.
• Collect photos, inspection details, and supporting documentation when material issues are identified.
• Ensure defective or incorrect materials are appropriately quarantined and dispositioned.

Safety & Compliance

• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized storeroom environment.
• Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and material handling equipment safely and effectively.
• Handle chemicals and regulated materials in accordance with site and regulatory requirements.
• Adhere to all company safety, environmental, quality, and inventory control procedures.
• Support audits and compliance activities related to inventory and materials management.

Required Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Maintenance, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.

Experience

• Minimum 3 years of experience in MRO inventory management, maintenance storeroom operations, warehouse operations, or related industrial environments.
• Experience supporting maintenance and reliability organizations preferred.
• Experience in pharmaceutical, manufacturing, life sciences, utilities, or industrial facilities preferred.

Technical Skills

• Working knowledge of SAP inventory management functions.
• Experience with inventory control, cycle counting, and reconciliation processes.
• Understanding of maintenance work order systems and spare parts management.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
• Experience with Ariba or other procurement systems preferred.
• Familiarity with barcode scanning and digital inventory technologies preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong understanding of spare parts inventory management principles.
• Knowledge of MRO materials, industrial equipment components, and maintenance practices.
• Ability to interpret bills of materials (BOMs), maintenance work orders, and technical documentation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent organizational and attention-to-detail capabilities.
• Effective communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain high inventory accuracy standards.
• Strong collaboration skills with maintenance, engineering, procurement, and operations teams.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
• Ability to work in warehouse, storeroom, manufacturing, and utility plant environments.
• Ability to wear required PPE and comply with all site safety requirements.

Work Environment: Independent role responsible for sustaining MRO inventory control, material availability, and spare parts management programs while supporting maintenance and engineering activities across the facility.
