Description

Veterinary Specialty Technician- Nephrology

Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists, Buzzards Bay, MA

Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists is looking for an experienced veterinary technician to work with our incoming nephrologist as we establish our Nephrology department. This role offers the opportunity to build your specialty nursing skills and help shape the daily routines of a new service.

If you enjoy detailed patient monitoring, complex medical cases, and getting to know clients through ongoing care, nephrology offers opportunities to use those interests.

About the Role

You’ll work closely with our nephrologist to care for patients with kidney disease and related conditions, supporting consultations, diagnostics, treatments, and hospitalized care. You’ll also collaborate with our Emergency and Critical Care and other specialty teams when patients need care across services.

As the department develops, you’ll help organize supplies, establish workflows, and prepare client education materials. Training will support your introduction to department-specific procedures and equipment.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist with nephrology consultations, examinations, diagnostics, and procedures.
  • Provide nursing care and monitor patients under veterinary direction.
  • Track fluid intake and output, body weight, vital signs, and treatment response.
  • Collect and process laboratory samples and communicate changes in patient status.
  • Place and maintain IV catheters, administer prescribed medications, and manage fluid therapy as directed.
  • Prepare and maintain equipment and supplies for specialty procedures.
  • Coordinate patient handoffs with other hospital departments.
  • Help clients understand home-care instructions, medications, and follow-up plans.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation.
  • Contribute to department organization and the training of team members as the service grows.

What We’re Looking For

  • Veterinary technician experience that includes caring for hospitalized patients.
  • Skills in patient assessment, IV catheter placement, sample collection, and advanced treatment administration and patient care.
  • Attention to detail when monitoring fluid balance and changes in patient condition.
  • Clear, respectful communication with clients and colleagues.
  • Organization and the ability to adjust priorities as patient needs change.
  • Interest in nephrology and willingness to learn new procedures and equipment.
  • CVT, RVT, or LVT credentials preferred.
  • Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care, or previous nephrology experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform essential patient-care duties, with or without reasonable accommodation, including assisting with lifting, positioning, and safely handling patients using team assistance and equipment as appropriate.

Schedule and Compensation

As the department is developing, the schedule is too.

  • You can expect four ten-hour days, with on-call responsibilities and weekend shifts as required by the Specialty department.
  • The initial training schedule may differ and include multiple department training.
  • There is a holiday rotation for all CCVS employees.
  • The initial training schedule may differ from the regular schedule.

Compensation range is $22 to $32/ hour, based on relevant experience, education, skills, and internal equity. Most new hires can expect an offer between the minimum and midpoint of the range.

Benefits and Professional Development (including but not limited to)

  • Paid time off and holiday pay
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance options
  • FSA or HSA options
  • Short- and long-term disability options
  • 401(k)
  • Continuing education program
  • VTS training track with doctor mentors
  • Advanced Veterinary Nurse Training Program
  • Uniform allowance
  • Trupanion pet insurance with company-paid premiums for two team member pets
  • On-site Veterinary Social Worker
