Greater Than is committed to advancing a racially just future through equitable education. The Senior Accountant owns core month-end close, reconciliation, and financial reporting functions, serving as Greater Than's primary finance resource. This role is responsible for complex journal entries and reconciliations, payroll accounting oversight, grant accounting, monthly and quarterly reporting, and annual support for budgeting, audit, and tax processes. The Senior Accountant applies sound judgment to restricted revenue, grants, payroll allocations, and other areas that require a strong understanding of the organization's operations and internal controls.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review month-end journal entries, including payroll allocations, IRA entries, recurring entries, benefit releases, and other close-related activity.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations, investment roll-forwards, and assigned balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Reconcile payroll tax, FSA/DCA, PTO, sabbatical, and other payroll-related accounts and ensure accuracy of supporting schedules. • Record deposits and review coding for restricted revenue, pledge payments, and other complex cash activity.
  • Reconcile revenue to donor or fundraising systems and resolve differences related to grants, pledges, and restricted funding. • Prepare program budget-versus-actual reports and organization-wide monthly financial statements and schedules.
  • Assemble monthly financial packages, including statements of position and activity, budget-to-actual reporting, cash flow, revenue summaries, ratios, and explanatory notes.
  • Support quarterly reforecasting of expenses and revenue and help leadership understand year-end projections.
  • Partner with Advancement and program leaders to build grant budgets, maintain grant status tracking, and prepare grant financial reports.
  • Manage restricted grant reporting and reconciliation and ensure grant activity is accurately reflected in internal and external reporting. • Oversee payroll accounting processes, review payroll support worksheets, and help ensure payroll submissions, IRA contributions, and benefit withholdings are accurate.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and segregation of duties for cash handling, reconciliations, and financial review.
  • Lead or support annual processes, including budget template roll-forwards, QBO budget uploads, year-end adjusting entries, audit schedules, tax schedules, and 1099 reporting.
  • Support annual budget development, including wage and personnel expense templates, revenue assumptions, grant planning, and organization-wide budget consolidation.

Education and Experience

  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including month-end close and financial statement preparation.
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, accruals, payroll accounting, and internal controls.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, restricted funding, grant tracking, and budget-versus-actual reporting strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online or a similar accounting system.
  • Ability to analyze discrepancies, make sound coding decisions, and communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
  • Experience supporting annual audit and tax preparation processes.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred; CPA or comparable advanced credential is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Greater Than strives to facilitate a healthy work/life balance culture. This position can work with their supervisor to create a flexible schedule and remote work options that cause minimal interference with the school schedule. Generous compensation includes:

  • Employer paid life, long- and short-term disability insurance
