    Job Description

Amazon Robotics is seeking a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer with deep printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and electronics manufacturing expertise to join our Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) team in Westborough, MA. You will own manufacturing readiness for the electronics inside our electromechanical robotic systems, from early design reviews through production ramp at our electronics manufacturing services (EMS) partners, applying Design for Excellence (DfX) principles across a global supply chain.

The Amazon Robotics (AR) Operations organization manufactures high-quality robotics and gets the right materials to the right place at the right time to enable our automated solutions. It"s a fast-paced operation that works cross-functionally with teams across Amazon globally, and is powered by data and performance indicators.

Are you inspired by invention? Is problem solving through teamwork in your DNA? Do you like the idea of seeing how your work impacts the bigger picture? Answer yes to any of these and you"ll fit right in here at Amazon Robotics. We are a smart team of doers that work passionately to apply manufacturing technology in robotics and software to solve real-world problems that will transform our customers" experiences. We invent new improvements every day. We will give you the tools and support you need to invent with us in ways that are rewarding, fulfilling and fun.

This role will report to the Head of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. You will be AME"s technical owner for PCBA and electronics manufacturing across multiple new product introduction (NPI) programs. You will apply DfX principles to influence electromechanical product designs, set the manufacturing requirements our EMS partners build to, qualify their processes, and drive technical root cause on electronics defects in production and the field. The successful candidate brings years of hands-on time on surface-mount technology (SMT) lines and is willing to "roll up sleeves and do what needs to get done" to consistently deliver results.

The strongest candidates bring 5+ years of PCBA process engineering at an EMS provider or an electronics manufacturing plant, covering SMT, reflow and test, plus hands-on use of the IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 workmanship standards.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Own PCBA manufacturing readiness at EMS partners from NPI through production ramp, including SMT line setup, stencil design, reflow profiling, selective and wave solder, conformal coating, potting and box build.
    • Provide design for manufacturing, assembly and test (DFM, DFA, DFT) feedback on schematics, board layouts and stack-ups at concept and detailed design phases. Cover panelization, component spacing, thermal relief and test point access.
    • Define test strategy with Hardware and Test Engineering: in-circuit test (ICT), flying probe, boundary scan, functional test (FCT) and burn-in. Set coverage targets and close escapes.
    • Qualify EMS processes through first article inspection, production part approval process (PPAP), control plans and process capability (Cpk). Run statistical process control (SPC) on solder paste inspection (SPI), automated optical inspection (AOI) and automated X-ray inspection (AXI) data.
    • Drive failure analysis and corrective action on electronics defects such as solder voiding, head-in-pillow, tombstoning, cracked ceramic capacitors, electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage and moisture-sensitive device handling, using 8D, 5-Why and Fishbone methods.
    • Apply IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, J-STD-020 and J-STD-033 requirements, and set the workmanship class for each product.
    • Evaluate and approve Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) on electrical commodities, including component alternates, obsolescence and approved manufacturer list changes. Assess manufacturing, supply chain and cost impact.
    • Lead process and design failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA and DFMEA) reviews with EMS partners and design teams.
    • Support adjacent electrical commodities (cable harnesses, sensors and cameras) and the electromechanical assemblies they go into.
    • Mentor AME team members and design engineers on electronics producibility.
    • Up to 30% travel required, including international EMS sites.

    A day in the life

You might start the day reviewing overnight SPI and AOI yield data from an EMS partner and flagging a drifting stencil. Mid-morning, you join a layout review with Hardware Engineering to move test points and fix a panelization issue before the board releases. After lunch, you could be dispositioning an ECO for a component alternate, leading a PFMEA with a supplier, or reviewing X-ray and cross-section results on a field return. You"ll collaborate daily with Hardware Engineering, Test Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality and Program Management, and you"ll see your work move from prototype boards to high-volume production.

Amazon offers a full range of benefits that support you and eligible family members, including domestic partners. About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
