Job Description

Position Title:

Sr. Director, Data Strategy & Operations

Department:

Business Intelligence Group

Corporate Area:

Digital & Marketing

Status:

Regular, Full time Exempt

Manager Title:

VP, Business Intelligence

Position Overview:

The Sr. Director, Data Strategy & Operations leads the data function within PBS Business Intelligence, owning how PBS collects, governs, and delivers audience and content performance data. The role directs Nielsen Operations, digital analytics implementation, and the Domo business intelligence platform, ensuring that internal stakeholders, member stations, and producers work from data that is accurate, consistent, and available when they need it. The Sr. Director is the technical counterpart to the Senior Director, Audience Insights & Analytics, and represents Business Intelligence in enterprise-wide data initiatives.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Data Strategy & Governance

  • Own the data strategy and roadmap for Business Intelligence, setting priorities for collection, architecture, and delivery that scale with PBS’s needs.
  • Establish and maintain the governance framework — metric definitions, data lineage, quality standards, and stewardship — so that PBS and member stations measure performance consistently.
  • Ensure data collection and use meet privacy obligations, including regulations governing consumer data and data about children and families.
  • Represent Business Intelligence in enterprise data initiatives, translating business needs into technical requirements with PBS technology teams.

Measurement Operations

  • Serve as PBS’s internal authority on measurement systems and implementation, from Nielsen operations to the adoption of next-generation measurement as it becomes available.
  • Direct Google Analytics implementation across PBS.org, PBSKIDS.org, and mobile and OTT apps, including tagging, data layer, and reporting configuration, so digital measurement is complete and trustworthy.
  • Own the Domo platform and the analytics data models built on it, partnering with PBS technology teams on upstream ingestion and infrastructure.
  • Manage relationships, contracts, and service levels with measurement and platform vendors, including Nielsen, Comscore, Google, and Domo.

Data Products & Distribution

  • Lead development of the data products and dashboards that put content performance data in the hands of internal stakeholders, member stations, and producers.
  • Drive adoption through stakeholder engagement, training, documentation, and process change where needed — measuring success by use, not by delivery.
  • Partner with the Audience Insights & Analytics team to ensure the data foundation supports the analysis and recommendations that team delivers.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Nielsen Operations, Digital Analytics, and Data Distribution teams, setting priorities and standards for data quality and operational reliability.
  • Build a team culture in which analysts raise data quality concerns early and document their work for others to use.
  • undefined

Requirements for success:

Required

  • 10+ years in data strategy, data operations, or analytics engineering within a complex organization, including work that directly supported senior management decisions.
  • 5+ years leading and developing a technical or operations team.
  • Experience owning a business intelligence platform — Domo, Tableau, Power BI, or comparable — and the data models behind it, with strong SQL skills.
  • Hands-on experience with digital analytics implementation (Google Analytics 4 or comparable) and with media measurement data such as Nielsen or Comscore.
  • Working knowledge of data governance practices and of privacy regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and requirements governing children’s data.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, ideally including computer science, statistics, or data science coursework.

Preferred

  • Experience in media, public media, or another large-scale content organization.
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms and concepts such as data lakes, ingestion, and virtualization.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Translates between business questions and technical architecture in both directions.
  • Builds trust in data — and repairs it quickly when the numbers are questioned.
  • Communicates for the audience at hand — a five-minute executive brief or a working session with engineers.
  • Brings clarity and sequencing to long-horizon technical work that stakeholders experience as slow.
