    Position Overview

The Industrial Engineer supports Universal Logistics’ on‑site operation at GM Lake Orion Assembly by analyzing processes, optimizing material flow, and driving continuous improvement across all departments. This role focuses on improving safety, quality, delivery, and cost through engineered standards, data analysis, workflow optimization, and labor planning. The Industrial Engineer partners closely with the Facility Manager, Operations Manager, supervisors, and GM stakeholders to ensure efficient, stable, and cost‑effective operations.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop engineered labor standards, time studies, process maps, and capacity models for all material‑handling functions.

    • Analyze production volumes, labor requirements, and workflow constraints to optimize resourcing and shift plans.

    • Improve material flow efficiency across small lot, bulk storage, sequencing, kitting, and container management.

    • Identify bottlenecks and implement Lean‑based solutions to reduce waste, improve throughput, and stabilize processes.

    • Maintain PFEP (Plan for Every Part), container data, line‑feed strategies, and optimization models supporting GM requirements.

    • Lead continuous improvement projects, Kaizen events, and root‑cause analysis for safety, quality, and operational issues.

    • Support WMS/ERP reporting, KPI dashboards, and data-driven decision making for operations leaders.

    • Collaborate with GM Industrial Engineering and Production Control teams to align plans, changes, and material‑flow needs.

    • Evaluate and optimize equipment layouts, storage strategies, ergonomic considerations, and line‑side presentation.

    • Support new launches, model year changes, and customer-driven engineering changes with updated process documentation and flow analysis.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, or related field.

    • 2–5+ years of industrial engineering or continuous improvement experience; automotive/3PL experience preferred.

    • Strong knowledge of material flow, warehouse design, line‑side delivery, inventory control, and JIT/JIS processes.

    • Proficiency in time studies, labor‑standards development, and workflow modeling.

    • Experienced with Lean, Kaizen, 5S, value stream mapping, and problem‑solving methodologies.

    • Skilled in Excel, Power BI, data analysis, and WMS/ERP system reporting.

    • Strong communication, presentation, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.

    • Ability to work on the floor in a fast‑paced, multi‑shift environment and support periodic off‑hours needs.
