The Solar Manufacturing Engineering team at Tesla is looking for a highly-motivated Manufacturing Controls Development Engineer to contribute to the development and ramp of solar manufacturing equipment at massive scale. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla's world-class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical portion of an incredibly exciting project. In addition to developing manufacturing equipment, the Manufacturing Controls Development Engineer works with cross-functional teams to test, validate, and roll-out equipment to production. The ideal candidate takes pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills and attention to detail.
Manage automation projects including equipment specification, project management, factory & site acceptance testing, installation, and commissioning/debugging
Collaborate with the Solar Engineering R&D team to propose solutions for Tesla's next-generation solar equipment designs
Troubleshoot and recover processes by PLC ladder logic, HMI, or tool management software, and implement changes/improvements
Program controls and automated vision systems for integrated quality control and process step verification
Optimize manufacturing lines to meet uptime, availability and reliability metrics - OEE, cycle time, quality, yield
Actively use tool data sources (e.g. MES reports) to quantitatively evaluate and track tool performance and create programs to improve relevant metrics
Work independently and with vendors to understand root causes of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate equipment modifications
Develop and deliver training to operations and maintenance technicians to ensure and seamless handover of new equipment
Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, drawings, BOM, spare parts, PFMEA, control plan, process flow chart
Own individual workstations, tools, or production lines
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
2-5+ years of work experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment involving automation equipment, robots, electromechanical systems, PLCs, and motion controls
PLC programming experience, ideally with Siemens, Beckhoff, or Innovance
Robot programming experience, preferably with Fanuc or Kuka
High level of proficiency with machine vision systems such as Cognex, Keyence, Omron, OpenCV
In-depth knowledge of equipment safety standards (ANSI/RIA 15.06, OSHA compliance) and electrical standards (NFPA 79, NEC, UL 508A)
Familiarity with script-based programming (Python, Go, SQL)
Proficiency creating detailed electrical schematics in CAD (AutoCAD Electrical preferred), and tooling design with Solidworks or 3D CAD software is a plus
Able to travel up to 25% of the time, both domestically and internationally
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

$117,360 - $176,040/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
