The Cell Manufacturing Power Electronics Controls and Modeling team is responsible for dynamics modeling, algorithm design, and controller implementation for switching power converters and ultra-high-resolution measurement systems. Tesla is seeking a power electronics controls engineer to join the team in developing high-performance controls for a wide spectrum of AC and DC products including chargers, grid-tied inverters, dc-dc converters, and novel applications. The engineer is expected to perform controls design through all stages starting with topology trade-offs, concept stage, modeling, implementation, and validation. You will show outstanding organizational and communication skills and an eagerness to push the industry forward.
Outline controller requirements based on system performance requirements
Evaluate new topologies for controllability and fit to system needs
Specify microcontroller requirements and drive part/component selection
Develop controls strategy and define the supporting algorithms
Develop dynamic models of the system, and tune controller algorithms accordingly to optimize performance
Translate algorithms into software implementation, design the software architecture and firmware implementation
Own firmware through life cycle from prototype to high-volume production, high-quality C code in a real-time embedded environment
Test, validate, and troubleshoot controller implementation. Collaborate with validation teams to add coverage to regression tests
Develop and utilize computer simulations (Matlab/Simulink, Hardware in the Loop, Software in the Loop) to investigate new algorithms, modifications, or corner-case events
Support safety and compliance testing
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or proof of exceptional skills in related fields with practical experience developing, implementing, and testing power electronics controls, or equivalent experience
Exceptional understanding of electrical engineering concepts, strong analytical skills with solid device, circuit, and controls theory fundamentals
Experience with embedded firmware development for real-time controls systems
Familiarity with safety and compliance standards for grid-connected power electronics
Strong hands-on testing and troubleshooting skills
Proficiency with EE tools (scopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, electronic loads)
Excellent communication skills, can clearly communicate technical findings to various audiences, be available to other team members when questions arise. Excellent attention to detail
5+ years of experience in electronic hardware and firmware integration, power electronics control, and battery design/testing preferred
Previous experience with battery cell testing (all form factors), high current interface design, and thermal systems management preferred
