    Description

We are seeking a Lead Engineer to own the technical vision and delivery of AWS"s Tax Profile platform-the system of record for customer entity identity, tax registration, and multi-jurisdiction compliance configuration. This role is responsible for transforming a critical billing infrastructure component into a scalable, multi-tenant platform that supports complex enterprise customers with global tax obligations across multiple entities and jurisdictions. You will lead architecture decisions, drive engineering execution, and partner closely with product, tax compliance, and dependent platform teams to deliver capabilities that directly unblock AWS"s largest strategic customers and international expansion.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Technical leadership and architecture: Own the system design and long-term technical vision for Tax Profile, evolving it from single-entity storage to a multi-persona, multi-jurisdiction platform supporting complex enterprise configurations.
    • Multi-jurisdiction capability delivery: Design and deliver features for multi-tax-registration management, jurisdiction-specific document collection and validation, and entity resolution logic that scales across regulatory regimes.
    • Platform abstraction design: Build scalable APIs and data models that decouple tax identity management from specific tenants or use cases-enabling downstream services (tax calculation, invoicing, e-invoicing, control plane) to consume Tax Profile as a platform.
    • Cross-team technical integration: Partner with Control Plane, Invoice Configuration, Tax Calculation, and Marketplace teams to define interfaces, resolve dependency bottlenecks, and ensure Tax Profile capabilities ship ahead of downstream consumers" timelines.
    • Enterprise customer unblock: Deliver capabilities that directly address complex billing requirements for strategic enterprise customers with multi-entity, multi-jurisdiction tax obligations.
    • Engineering excellence: Establish technical standards for the team including code quality, operational readiness, testing strategy, and scalability patterns. Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar.
    • Operational ownership: Ensure Tax Profile operates with high availability and low-latency at scale, owning operational metrics, on-call excellence, and incident response for a system that sits in the critical path of billing.
    • Technical debt reduction: Identify and systematically retire country-specific implementations in favor of generalized, configurable solutions that reduce per-country engineering effort.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
