Job Description
Position Title: Staff Accountant
Department: Accounting
Reports To: Accounting Manager
Status: Full-time
FLSA Status: Exempt
Compensation: $65,000-$80,000 (based on education and experience)
 
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant is responsible for overseeing financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and supporting the Accounting Manager in maintaining accurate financial records. This role will take on a more advanced responsibilities, including handling payroll processing and tax compliance. The Staff Accountant will also assist in managing accounts payable and receivable, general ledger reconciliation, and financial reporting. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 
Payroll
  • Process bi-weekly and monthly payroll for employees
  • Ensure accuracy of timekeeping records and compliance with wage laws
  • Calculate and record payroll taxes, deductions, and benefits
  • Prepare payroll-related reports and maintain documentation
  • Coordinate with HR for employee payroll updates and benefit deductions
Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable
  • Process vendor invoices and payments
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies
  • Issue customer invoices and manage collections
  • Maintain accurate records of AP/AR transactions
Financial Reporting
  • Generate and analyze monthly financial reports
  • Assist with budget preparation and forecasting
  • Gasoline Usage and Utilization Reporting
General Ledger
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts
  • Prepare journal entries and financial adjustments
  • Ensure proper recording of financial transactions
Compliance & Auditing
  • Assist with year-end audits and tax reporting
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies
  • Support regulatory reporting requirements
Other Duties
  • Assist with special accounting projects as needed
  • Respond to internal and external accounting inquiries
  • Continuously identify and implement process improvements
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
  • 3+ years of relevant accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of payroll processing and tax compliance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and accounting software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the engineering/construction industry
  • Knowledge of GAAP and other accounting principles
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Experience with payroll software and processing
