Accountabilities

The Staff Accountant - Retail Sales Audit is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of daily retail sales transactions by performing reconciliations of cash, credit card, and other tender activity. This role supports the month-end close process, maintains general ledger integrity, investigates discrepancies, and partners with store operations and finance teams to ensure compliance with company policies and internal controls. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and experience working in a high-volume retail environment

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sales Audit
  • Perform daily sales audits for retail store locations to ensure accurate recording of sales transactions.
  • Reconcile daily point-of-sales (POS) activity to the general ledger.
  • Validate sales, returns, discounts, gift cards, store credits, and other tender transactions.
  • Review exception reports and investigate sales discrepancies.

Cash & Credit Card Reconciliations

  • Reconcile daily cash deposits to bank records and POS activity.
  • Reconcile daily credit card settlements with merchant processor reports and bank deposits.
  • Investigate and resolve cash shortages, overages, missing deposits, and credit card variances.
  • Monitor outstanding reconciliation items and ensure timely resolution.
  • Prepare supporting documentation for daily and monthly reconciliations.

Accounts Receivable

  • Manage Wholesale Accounts receivable.
  • Deposit checks, complete cash application and approves credit holds.
  • Monitor Accounts receivable aging.

General Accounting

  • Prepare journal entries related to daily sales, cash, and merchant settlement activity.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities.
  • Ensure accounting records comply with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Support financial statement accuracy through timely and accurate account analysis.

Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliation reports.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Develop and maintain reconciliation schedules and supporting documentation.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with internal cash handling procedures and accounting controls.
  • Partner with Store Operations, Loss Prevention, Treasury, and IT to resolve transactional issues.
  • Support internal and external audit requests by providing documentation and explanations.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with company policies.

Requirements

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a retail or multi-location environment.
  • Experience performing sales audit functions and daily reconciliations.
  • Experience with merchant services and credit card settlement processes preferred.
  • Knowledge of retail POS systems and cash management processes.
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles and GAAP.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and formulas.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in a high-volume retail organization.
  • Knowledge of payment processors and merchant settlement platforms.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with the ability to streamline accounting processes.

This position is full time in office.
