Staff Accountant

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant will support core accounting functions, including financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, and month-end close activities, working closely with the accounting and finance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily invoice coding and processing.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry within ERP/accounting systems.
  • Prepare and post journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Maintain schedules and support documentation for account balances.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts and investigate discrepancies.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Assist in preparing reports for projects, billings, collections, contracts, etc.
  • Assist with maintaining internal controls and compliance procedures.
  • Support audit processes by preparing requested documentation.
  • Assist with departmental recordkeeping responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with team members on accounting tasks and process improvements.
  • Perform ad hoc accounting projects and analysis as assigned.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • At least two years of accounting experience in public or corporate accounting.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), CPA candidate, or interest in pursuing CPA preferred (not required).
  • Construction industry experience preferred.
  • Firm knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP).
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 606 and percentage-of-completion accounting preferred.
  • Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, Great Plains, Spectrum, or similar systems).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail; highly organized, methodical, and results-driven.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of integrity with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Adaptable and capable of working in a fast-paced environment.

  • This is an in-office position based in Beltsville, Maryland.
