Salary: $100,000 - $160,000 per year
A bit about us:We are a long established nonprofit with roots in California's labor and civil rights movements, and for decades we have worked to improve the lives of working Latino families and the communities around them. Our largest program develops, owns and manages affordable housing: thousands of apartments for low income families and seniors, plus hundreds of single family homes, spread across several Southwestern states. We also run education and community media programs. Our headquarters is in Downtown Los Angeles, and our newest communities include LEED certified family and supportive housing in LA County.
Why join us?This is not a seat in a large firm pool. Our legal team is small, and the attorney in this role works directly with executive leadership, advising on the questions that shape the organization: contracts and business transactions, governance, employment matters, nonprofit compliance, and litigation strategy. You will handle cases hands on, manage outside counsel, and help build the legal function itself. There are no billable hours. We are open to attorneys early in their careers who write and research well, and to seasoned attorneys ready to lead, with title and compensation set to match. Attorneys coming from real estate, corporate, or public interest practice will all find their experience put to real use here.
Job Details- Bar admission: Active California bar membership preferred. Admission in another Southwestern state where we operate will be considered.
- Experience: 1+ years of practice. Senior title for roughly six or more years. Backgrounds in real estate, corporate, housing, or public interest law are all welcome, and prior in house or nonprofit experience is a plus.
- Advisory and transactional: Draft, review and negotiate contracts and business transactions; review organization wide policies before rollout; oversee corporate governance and regulatory compliance, including tax exempt organization rules, advocacy and lobbying limits, and campaign finance.
- Litigation: Handle civil matters in state and federal court from investigation through discovery, motions, depositions, mediation and trial, and coordinate closely with outside counsel on larger matters.
- Employee relations: Oversee and vet the employee relations function and advise leadership on employment law questions.
- Leadership (senior level): Supervise, hire and train legal staff and volunteers; prepare regular legal and compliance updates for executive leadership.
- Skills: Excellent research and writing, sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to explain legal risk plainly to non lawyers. Experience serving low income, immigrant, or Latino communities is valued, and Spanish is a plus.
- Work environment: Mission driven, collaborative, and hands on. Flexible schedule, with some travel to our sites in other counties and states.
- Benefits: Health, dental, vision and life insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid time off after an initial 90 day period.
