    Position Overview

    The Staff Dentist provides comprehensive dental care consistent with the highest standards of the dental profession. This position delivers preventive, restorative, surgical, and emergency dental services while promoting lifelong oral health through patient education and preventive care.

    Working as part of KANA\s integrated healthcare team, the Staff Dentist develops treatment plans, collaborates with providers across disciplines, mentors clinical staff, and helps ensure patients receive high-quality, compassionate care throughout the Kodiak region. Regular travel to remote village communities is an essential part of this role.

    What You\ll Do

    Provide Comprehensive Dental Care

    • Perform comprehensive oral examinations, diagnoses, and treatment planning

    • Deliver preventive, restorative, prosthodontic, endodontic, periodontal, oral surgery, and pediatric dental services within the scope of a general dentist

    • Prescribe medications and provide appropriate referrals for specialty care when needed

    • Educate patients on preventive oral healthcare and healthy dental practices

    • Ensure patients understand treatment plans, options, and expected outcomes with compassion and empathy

    Collaborate with the Care Team

    • Work closely with physicians, behavioral health providers, dental hygienists, dental assistants, Dental Health Aide Therapists, and other healthcare professionals

    • Coordinate patient referrals and specialty care within and outside the Indian Health Service (IHS) system

    • Partner with Revenue Cycle and Case Management regarding treatment plans requiring financial coordination

    • Support quality improvement initiatives, peer review activities, chart audits, and clinical performance measures

    Support Community Oral Health

    • Promote preventive dentistry through patient education and community outreach

    • Participate in village travel to provide dental care in remote communities throughout the Kodiak Archipelago

    • Serve on committees and support community health initiatives

    • Help improve access to quality oral healthcare across KANA\s service area

    Contribute to Clinical Excellence

    • Maintain accurate clinical documentation, coding, and billing

    • Assist with clinic operations and continuous quality improvement efforts

    • Support ancillary staff and promote adherence to clinic policies and procedures

    • Participate in continuing education to remain current with advances in dentistry and clinical best practices

    • Help identify equipment, supply, staffing, and operational needs that support quality patient care

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree

    • Current State of Alaska dental license or ability to obtain licensure upon hire

    • Three to five years of clinical dental experience

    • Ability to travel by small aircraft to remote village communities

    • Strong communication and patient education skills

    • Commitment to patient-centered, culturally responsive care

    Preferred

    • Experience practicing in Tribal, rural, community health, or public health settings

    • Experience working with electronic dental records and healthcare information systems

    • Interest in preventive dentistry, community outreach, and interdisciplinary healthcare collaboration

    Work Schedule

    KANA\s standard work schedule is 37.5 working hours per week, consisting of 7.5 paid working hours per day plus a one-hour unpaid lunch break (8.5 hours on site per day). Regular travel to remote village communities by small aircraft is required based on patient and community needs.
