Under the direction of the Medical Director and in accordance with established standards of medical practice, the Staff Physician provides comprehensive primary health care services to a diverse population of students at the University of Dayton. The physician is responsible for the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and management of a wide spectrum of medical conditions, including acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, mental health concerns, and other issues specific to college-age individuals. They also provide patient education and preventive care and serve as an important resource in support of the students'' holistic wellbeing.

% | Duties/Responsibilities

50% | Patient Evaluation and Treatment:

  • Providing primary health care services for students.
  • Evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and managing patients.
  • Taking detailed medical histories, including current concerns, past medical history, review of systems, family history, habits, and allergies.
  • Performing physical examinations.
  • Assessing and managing students with acute, episodic and chronic illnesses.
  • Evaluating and managing injuries, including conditions like concussions, sprains, and lacerations.
  • Determining appropriate diagnoses and prescribing specialized treatment plans, medications, or therapies.
  • Placing orders for needed lab work, X-rays, or other diagnostic tests and evaluating/interpreting results.
  • Requesting further medical evaluations as necessary and making referrals to specialists or hospital care.
  • Providing urgent care services for students presenting without scheduled appointments, when necessary.
  • Performing common minor office procedures, such as suturing lacerations, removing foreign bodies, treating warts, performing toenail surgeries, or performing excision/biopsy of minor lesions.
  • Performing various types of physical examinations, including routine, entrance, athletic, pre-matriculation, employment, and study abroad exams.
  • Managing students with complex health conditions, within the appropriate scope of care.

25% | Patient Education and Prevention:

  • Explaining diagnoses and treatment plans to educate students.
  • Providing comprehensive instructions on medication or therapy administration.
  • Offering relevant health instruction, counseling, and education on health promotion and maintenance.
  • Actively promoting disease prevention activities.

5% | Specialized Clinical Areas:

  • Assessment and management of mental health conditions, such as adjustment disorders, depression, and anxiety.
  • Providing basic gynecology and women''s health care, including exams, screenings, hormone regulation, STI evaluation, testing and treatment.
  • Providing travel consultations and advising on travel immunizations.
  • Evaluating disordered eating.
  • Managing infectious diseases.

10% | Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Preparing adequate, appropriate, and accurate documentation of all students encountered.
  • Completing medical records and patient correspondence in a timely manner (3 business days, unless special circumstances).
  • Utilizing an electronic health record (EHR) system for notes and scheduling.

5% | Collaboration and Consultation:

  • Working collaboratively and cooperatively with nurses and other clinical staff.
  • Serving as a resource and providing medical guidance or oversight to clinical staff.
  • Providing consultation to other health care professionals to aid in patient care.
  • Serving as a liaison with other campus departments or external agencies.

5% | Administrative and Other Duties:

  • Providing coverage for other physicians'' absences, high-volume periods, meetings, and time off.
  • Participating in performance improvement projects, quality improvement programs, and administrative tasks.
  • Assisting in the development and review of medical and nursing protocols.
  • Attending and contributing to staff meetings and conferences.
  • Participating in professional development activities and continuing medical education.
  • Participating in University outreach programs and serving as a resource for campus public health initiatives.
  • Maintaining compliance with billing and coding practices.
  • Participating in the formulation of policies and procedures related to the Student Health Center.
  • Participating in the management of on-site medical emergency procedures.
  • Performing other duties or responsibilities as requested by the Medical Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from an accredited medical school with an MD or DO degree

  2. Successful completion of an accredited residency program

  3. Board certification

  4. Training appropriate for college health

  5. Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Ohio or eligibility to obtain licensure (must be licensed before work can begin)

  6. Current and unrestricted DEA certificate or eligibility to obtain

  7. Proven experience working with young adults

  8. Basic computer knowledge and skills

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  1. Board certification in a primary care specialty such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Adolescent Medicine

  2. Minimum of one year post residency outpatient experience caring for adolescents and young adults

  3. Recent clinical experience as a practicing physician (within the last 2 years preferred)

  4. BLS/CPR certification

  5. No history of significant medical license or other privilege restrictions

  6. Strong interpersonal skills, as well as excellent verbal and written communication abilities

  7. Experience in laboratory ordering and review, minor procedures (suturing, etc.), and dispensing of medications

  8. Proven experience in the diagnosis and care of mental health, sexual health, and orthopedic conditions

  9. Expertise in radiologic diagnosis and clinical microscopy

  10. Electronic health record proficiency

  11. Interest and experience in educating patients and students in pertinent health topics

  12. Ability to work within the framework of a Catholic Marianist university and support views consistent with these ideals

  13. Commitment to promoting diversity and a welcoming campus climate

  14. Experience working effectively with international populations, diverse groups and individuals

  15. Ability to work collaboratively as part of the Student Health Center team

  16. Experience working effectively in a fast paced environment
