Role SummaryThe State Tax Manager will oversee key aspects of state income tax compliance, planning, and audit support while contributing to process improvements across the tax function. This role plays a critical part in managing state tax notices, leading compliance reviews, and supporting complex planning initiatives for a multi-entity corporate environment.
Working closely with senior tax leadership, the State Tax Manager will guide staff, collaborate across accounting and finance teams, and deliver accurate, timely, and compliant state tax reporting that minimizes exposure and supports strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities- Manage state income tax notices including research, issue resolution, and communication with state representatives
- Lead and support state tax planning projects including research, fact-finding, and transaction-related initiatives
- Supervise staff in the collection, organization, and analysis of data needed for state income tax filings
- Review state returns prepared by third-party providers and ensure compliance with regulations and SOX requirements
- Oversee documentation gathering for state income and sales tax audits and communicate with auditors as needed
- Negotiate and resolve audit issues and state-level examinations
- Review and approve state tax accruals and support quarterly and annual financial reporting requirements
- Prepare state income tax workpapers for year-end tax reporting, budgeting, and long-range planning
- Monitor existing and proposed legislation to evaluate impacts on state income tax obligations
- Evaluate the tax compliance process and recommend improvements with an emphasis on technology-enabled solutions
Key Requirements- CPA or completion of all CPA exams required
- Three or more years of state income tax experience, ideally in a public accounting environment
- Strong understanding of state tax principles and multi-state corporate tax compliance
- Ability to hold technical conversations and communicate tax concepts clearly
- Experience stepping into a leadership or managerial role is welcomed
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Proficiency in Excel and comfort with tax technology tools
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across departments
Preferred Skills- Masters in Taxation
- Experience transitioning from public accounting to industry
- Exposure to process improvement and tax technology
- Strong analytical and documentation skills
