    Position Overview

We are looking for a proactive and skilled Professional Engineer to join our team. In this full-time salaried position, you will be responsible for designing and analyzing tubular and structural steel structures used in electrical substations and transmission applications. Responsibilities will include the design of transmission structures, substation structures, foundations, overhead wire systems, and associated structural components.

You will ensure that all designs comply with applicable codes, industry standards, customer specifications, and project requirements while collaborating with customer representatives and internal Project Management, Engineering, Detailing, and Manufacturing Teams.

This position will play an important role in translating customer requirements and engineering specifications into practical, cost-effective designs that can be efficiently fabricated and delivered. The successful candidate will work closely with our manufacturing facilities to ensure designs consider structural performance, material efficiency, fabrication requirements, and overall product quality.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Design and interpret drawings for transmission and substation structures and foundations per customer specifications and applicable design codes.
    • Perform structural analysis and engineering calculations for tubular and structural steel components, including poles, frames, support structures, equipment supports, platforms, and other utility infrastructure.
    • Evaluate structural loading conditions, including wind, ice, dead loads, and other applicable environmental and operational loading requirements.
    • Develop and review structural designs, connection details, and material specifications to ensure structural integrity, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
    • Review internal drawings to ensure compliance with specifications and codes.
    • Utilize PLS-Pole software for modeling and analysis of structures.
    • Utilize structural engineering software to analyze and optimize steel structures, including tubular and fabricated steel assemblies.
    • Problem-solve issues related to design, construction, and compliance.
    • Create and verify material list descriptions for transmission lines.
    • Prepare and review engineering calculations, design documentation, and technical reports to support customer approvals and manufacturing requirements.
    • Collaborate with detailing and drafting personnel to ensure engineering designs are accurately translated into fabrication and construction drawings.
    • Work closely with manufacturing and fabrication teams to identify opportunities to improve manufacturability, material utilization, product quality, and production efficiency.
    • Provide engineering support during fabrication, including resolving design questions, reviewing proposed modifications, and addressing manufacturing-related technical issues.
    • Participate in customer design reviews and technical discussions as required to clarify specifications, resolve engineering issues, and develop solutions that meet project requirements.
    • Review applicable industry codes and standards and maintain awareness of changes affecting utility structural steel design.
    • Travel periodically to different company locations.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, or structural engineering.
    • 3 to 5 years of experience in the Electrical Substation and Transmission Lines Industry.
    • PE License preferred, but at a minimum, an EIT studying for the PE is required.
    • Knowledge of PLS, RISA 3D, Mathcad, or other structural software.
    • Knowledge of AutoCAD or other relevant drafting software.
    • Some experience in steel and concrete structural design.
    • Familiarity with industry standards.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    Additional Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience designing tubular steel structures, transmission poles, substation structures, and fabricated structural steel assemblies.
    • Working knowledge of structural steel design, including member sizing, connection design, bolted and welded connections, and material specifications.
    • Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards, such as AISC, ASCE 7, ACI, NESC, and relevant IEEE standards.
    • Understanding of steel fabrication processes, including welding, cutting, drilling, forming, and assembly.
    • Ability to interpret customer specifications, engineering drawings, structural calculations, and fabrication drawings.
    • Experience working with manufacturing, detailing, and project management teams in an engineered-to-order or custom manufacturing environment.
    • Experience with PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, RISA 3D, STAAD. Pro, SAP2000, or similar structural analysis software is a plus.
    • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple engineering projects and priorities simultaneously.
