JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for maintaining City Streets and assisting the Utility Departments with projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

• Operates an air hammer and air compressor while repairing pavement and concrete.
• Pours concrete in sidewalk forms, driveway forms, and other public works jobs; finishes concrete with floats and edgers; mixes concrete in wheel barrow.
• Cuts and patches sidewalks and highways; pours concrete or asphalt as necessary; assures road or sidewalks are safe for public use.
• Repairs, replaces, and maintains storm drain pipes on city streets.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of practices and procedures of equipment operations.
• Knowledge of potential hazards and safety procedures used in equipment operations.
• Skill in safe and proper use of equipment.
• Skill in detecting needed repairs and making operation adjustments.
• Ability to operate equipment skillfully and carefully in various weather conditions.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Street Supervisor or other designated supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions, which require the use of some judgment. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and reviews completed work for compliance with instructions and procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate equipment that the city utilizes in construction work and in the maintenance of roads. Successful performance results in safe and properly functioning roads and other public structures. Poor performance may result in unsafe roads, poor public relations, excessive costs, and lawsuits against the city. The work consists of tasks that are related, but are complicated by weather, soil conditions, obstructions, equipment failure, traffic, and having to deal with the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed with the employee walking outdoors, climbing ladders, performing excavations, climbing stairs, driving vehicles, sitting in vehicles, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, stretching, crawling, and crouching. The employee must hear sufficiently to recognize change in sounds made by machinery, equipment, or motors. The employee must see shapes and outlines of objects both near and at a distance, with depth perception required. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is not regularly required to move or lift up to 100 pounds. The employee is regularly exposed to weather conditions, especially cold and hot temperatures, humidity, rain, and sun. The employee is also exposed to airborne irritants, fumes, dust, gases, noxious odors, vibrations, electrical shock, and moving mechanical parts. The incumbent's working conditions are typically very loud.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

Qualifications

Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
