Description
Under the direct supervision of the Biology Laboratory Manager, the Biology student laboratory assistant is responsible for the preparation of material and equipment for Biology laboratory classes. The lab assistant must be able to communicate effectively, follow written instructions, verbal directions, and safety policies established by the Math, Science, and Engineering department.
Examples of Duties
A. Assists in the preparation of chemical solutions used by students and faculty in laboratory classes by measuring and mixing pre-determined quantities of ingredients.
B. Cleans and maintains laboratory glassware.
C. Assists in setting up biological displays and equipment used in laboratory classes by students and faculty following instructions provided.
D. Assists in the restocking of consumables between classes and in the dismantling of laboratory set-up following completion of laboratory.
E. Assists in maintaining an organized and safe learning and working environment.
F. Follows instructions on the proper use and storage of chemicals, equipment, and organization of work/laboratory areas.
G. Assists in maintenance of preserved/living plant and animal specimens. This may involve following a schedule and instructions for planting and watering of plants in laboratory classes.
H. Other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
I. Assists in maintaining a current inventory. Notifies Lab Manager of low inventory.
Minimum Qualifications
A. High school diploma or equivalent and has completed or is enrolled in a biology class is required.
B. Must have taken and successfully completed at least one science course at the community college or university level.
C. Able to understand terminology used in science.
D. Must be able to interact with others in a professional manner.
E. Must have excellent communication skills.
F. Must be able to work independently and effectively with others.
G. Must be able to maintain a consistent work schedule.
H. Must be a current student at Kankakee Community College enrolled in six or more credit hours during fall or spring semesters. For summer employment, student must be enrolled in three or more credit hours in the summer term and/or six or more credit hours during fall semester.
I. Student is required to read and agree to the KCC Student Employment Agreement.
J. Federal Work-Study students should also read and agree to the program rules and regulations.
K. Work schedule and hours may vary and are determined by each departments need. Maximum of 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. Maximum of 29 hours when classes are not in session or during the summer.
L. Qualified candidate must be functionally literate in reading, writing, and computation skills as well as computer literate or willing to learn.
Supplemental Information
Rate of pay: $15.00 per hour eff 1/1/25.
