ISO New England is one of the most pivotal energy companies you've probably never heard of. Our job is to oversee the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of New England and to administer the region's $10+ billion "stock exchange" for buying and selling of wholesale electricity. Department Description:

The Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) department engages in both long-term research projects and near-term design/process improvements. The department consists of experts in three topic areas: power systems, simulations, and markets. In all projects, the goal of the department is to provide innovative and practical solutions to current and emerging questions for ISO New England.

What You'll be Working On:

Energy storage is becoming increasingly important to modern grid planning and operations. In this internship, you'll use state-of-the-art AI and data science techniques to analyze historical storage behavior and develop insights that can support more accurate storage modeling in power system studies. You'll work on a real-world challenge at the intersection of power systems, machine learning, and grid innovation-building practical experience while contributing to research that matters.

How You'll Make an Impact:

Your work will help improve how storage resources are represented in power system models, supporting more accurate studies and better-informed decisions as the grid evolves. By applying AI-assisted analysis to real operational data, you'll help ISO New England explore new ways to understand storage operations, enhance modeling practices, and support reliable electricity for millions of people across the region.

What We Look for in a Candidate:

• Background in power systems, operations research, machine learning, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with Python and packages such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
• Ability to work with large datasets and translate analysis into clear technical findings.
• Curiosity, problem-solving skills, and an interest in using AI to solve real-world energy challenges.

This is an hourly position depending on your year in college. Interns are eligible for some paid time off benefits and have access to our wellness program.

Salary Range

$19-$36 USD

This is a U.S. based role. If the successful candidate resides outside of the U.S., relocation will be required.

To be eligible for the internship candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
