Student Nurse Tech

Position Overview:

• Department: Nursing
• Schedule: PRN; will include days, nights, or evening shifts and must work 48 hours in an 8-week scheduling period (including one weekend shift on Saturday or Sunday)
• Work Location: UAB St. Vincent’s East

Job Highlights
The Student Nurse Tech (SNT) role, formerly known as Student Nurse Intern (SNI), is a great opportunity for current nursing students seeking hands-on clinical experience while in nursing school. You'll function like a patient care technician (PCT), floating to different units and be assigned to a group of patients, help them complete activities of daily living, obtain vital signs and blood sugars, and perform venipunctures and other tasks assigned by the RN. We are currently only accepting RN students at this time.

What You Will Do:

Under the supervision of a nurse, provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.

• Completes assigned nursing orders, including assisting patient with activities of daily living and taking vital signs.
• Observes patient status and responses; documents and reports changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to appropriate staff.
• Reports test results and patient observations to appropriate staff.
• Documents all patient care accurately in the medical record.
• Maintains a safe and orderly environment by keeping patient rooms clean and ensuring medical equipment is prepared and maintained.
• Performs other tasks as assigned, including environmental services and preparing/transporting patients for diagnostic services.

What You Will Need:

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations: 

• BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.

Education: 

• High school diploma/GED required. Must be accepted or enrolled into a Nursing program upon date of hire/transfer and begin classes within 90 days of date of hire/transfer. Exceptions will be made for students in one-semester of remediation, academic probation or equivalent.
• (Student Nurse Techs are expected to transition into a nursing role within our organization upon graduation. If an intern does not accept a nursing position with the organization upon graduation, their employment as a Student Nurse Tech will end effective their graduation date.)
