Position Description

Are you organized, approachable, and eager to gain professional experience while supporting your peers? If you enjoy academic planning and guiding others through their educational pathways, we invite you to apply for the Student Advising Specialist position. This proactive role serves as a primary point of contact and a reliable support system for students navigating their college experience.

Working closely with the Director of Academic Advising, you will be the go-to student specialist for a variety of critical tasks. This role offers hands-on experience in higher education administration, professional communication, and academic support. This position pays $12 per hour to start.

Position Responsibilities

  • Front-Line Support: Be the welcoming first contact (in-person, phone, email) for students with general questions. Youll expertly direct them to the right advisor, department, or campus resource.

  • Peer Advising: Help new/returning students understand basic degree requirements and registration language (drop, withdraw, incompletes etc.) navigate academic policies, and find the resources they need to thrive (like tutoring, counseling, or disability support). Attend drop in hours to assist students with basic advising questions.

  • Confidentiality: Learn and maintain strict confidentiality with student records (well provide training on FERPA-Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

  • Office Management: Help keep the advising office running smoothly! This includes managing office supplies and organizing student advising files and resources.

  • Service Hours: Prepare essential materials for retention and first year experience events hosted by the Center for Academic Planning and Empowerment (CAPE); manage check in process and attendance for service hours events hosted by First Year Programming.

  • Teaching Assistant: If your schedule allows, serve as a teaching assistant for first year courses (i.e. INST 100, INST 140, INST 150, INST 151) where there is need.

Qualifications

Must-Haves (Required)

  • Current Student: Must be a currently enrolled student in good academic standing (a minimum 3.0 GPA is preferred).

  • Communication: Excellent speaking and writing skills, professional phone manners, and a genuinely friendly and welcoming presence.

  • Organization: Strong attention to detail, excellent time management, punctuality, and planning skills (especially when it comes to your own course schedule) and comfort using Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Calendar).

  • Availability: Must be able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule ranging from 5-15 hours of work. The main office is in Centennial Hall (elevator accessible), but other events may take place in buildings such as Walton, Warner Library, and McInnis.

Great-to-Haves (Preferred)

  • Academic Knowledge: Already familiar with key campus resources (like CAPS, ARC, ODA) and student tools (like MyEastern for degree evaluation and the registration process).

  • Experience: Previous experience in a tutoring, student leadership, customer service, or office setting is a big plus!

  • Proactivity: Youre a self-starter who can take initiative, work independently, and troubleshoot basic academic questions, and knows how to ask for help when you are lost!

In accordance with state laws, Act 73 of 2007, Act 153 of 2014, Act 168 (relating to the Child Protective Services Law), school employees of Eastern University who will have "direct contact with children" must complete the background check process prior to employment. Results must be submitted within ten days of receipt.

Part-time Regular staff who are scheduled 30-36 hours per week over the course of a year, receive a full benefit package based on their part-time scheduled hours. Healthcare coverage is based on the ACA medical coverage guidelines. Affiliate faculty receive a benefit package as outlined with their covenant. Adjunct faculty may be eligible for medical coverage under the ACA after an annual one year lookback review.

Part-time staff who are scheduled to work less than 30 hours per week schedule are eligible for employer contribution towards the retirement plan after one year of employment. Eligibility rules apply. Adjunct faculty may make employee deferral contributions towards the retirement plan.

Part-Time Graduate Assistant Coaches are eligible for participation in the Tuition Remission Coaches Program.

Temporary, Contractors and Seasonal Employees: Individuals in this status are scheduled on an as-needed-basis and are not eligible for participation in the University's benefits programs.
