About the Center

The Multilingual Writing and Speaking Center is a dynamic hub dedicated to advancing multilingual communication skills. Supported by the Eirik Børve Endowment for Foreign Language Instruction and inspired by Dr. Thalia Dorwick's vision for excellence in language education, the Center empowers students to become articulate, confident communicators across multiple languages.

Our mission is to integrate writing and speaking proficiency, strengthen grammar, style, and accuracy, and cultivate intercultural competence in multilingual contexts. We emphasize effectiveness in both written and spoken communication through enhanced precision in language use. We strive to enable learners not only to communicate, but to communicate effectively and efficiently. By championing the humanities as a cornerstone of global citizenship and lifelong learning, we prepare students to engage thoughtfully and successfully in an interconnected world.

In relation to the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (DMLL), the Center is not a stand-alone unit, but is structurally embedded within course design and instructional practices. Center consultations are integrated across assignments (e.g., film critiques, presentations, debate, capstone projects, and OPI preparation), following a clear process-oriented model of drafting, feedback, and revision. Student visits are distributed across the semester rather than clustered, and engagement is structured, quantified, and consistent, with multiple required visits tied to different stages of learning and assignment development.

Position Overview

We are seeking dedicated Professional Tutors of Languages to join our team at the Multilingual Writing and Speaking Center. Tutors provide individualized and small-group support to students working in a variety of target languages offered through the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

Candidates should possess advanced language proficiency and be able to support learners across all levels-from beginning to advanced-in both spoken and written modes of communication.

In addition to scheduled instructional hours, tutors contribute to the life of the Center by assisting with outreach and promotional efforts, participating in Center events, and supporting a collaborative, multilingual learning community. This position is ideal for students who are passionate about language learning, proficiency-based instruction, and helping peers develop clarity, confidence, and precision in both written and spoken communication.

Languages

French, German, Korean, Japanese, and Spanish (Fall 2026)

Responsibilities

I. Instruction and Learner Support

• Familiarize oneself with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and apply them in tutoring practice
• Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions (in person and/or online) in the assigned target language(s)
• Follow the Center's pedagogical guidelines and support learners in developing writing and speaking proficiency, including grammar, sentence structure, organization, and style
• Offer constructive, individualized feedback on writing and speaking tasks, including course assignments and academic projects
• Support integrated skill development across writing and speaking modalities
• Engage learners through active questioning techniques and encourage learner autonomy

II. Center Engagement and Outreach

• Participate in Center events such as workshops, multilingual programs, and special initiatives
• Assist with Center promotion and outreach activities
• Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive learning environment

III. Administrative and Professional Responsibilities

• Attend required orientation and regular meetings
• Report directly to the Center Director

Compensation

$13-18 hourly rate, commensurate with experience

The Center provides pedagogical training and ongoing support as part of professional development.

Tutoring expertise may be formally recognized with an official certificate following a successful performance review. The review will be conducted after completion of at least 60 tutoring hours, participation in required training sessions, and meaningful contributions to the Center over a minimum of one semester.

Required Qualifications

• Current enrollment as a student at Case Western Reserve University
• Demonstrated advanced or near-native proficiency in the target language in both speaking and writing
• Ability to support learners' development across both spoken and written modes of communication, from beginning to advanced levels
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to provide constructive, individualized feedback to learners from diverse backgrounds
• Willingness to learn and apply the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines
• Highly organized, dependable, and detail-oriented
• Applicants must be eligible for employment in the United States for the duration of the appointment. Students with an F-1 visa are encouraged to apply, as they are generally authorized to work on campus without additional authorization from USCIS

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate student status or senior undergraduate standing
• Knowledge of second language acquisition principles
• Prior experience in language tutoring or teaching, preferably at the college level

Work Schedule

• Flexible hours; sessions may be scheduled during weekdays and evenings
• Both in-person and virtual tutoring options may be available
