Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Department of Medicine -- Section of Community & Population Medicine is seeking a graduate (Master's or Doctoral) student to support community-based interventions for firearm suicide prevention. One is an LDH-LSU funded research project aimed at creating protective environments for Veteran and youth suicide prevention in Louisiana by increasing the number of mental health providers in Louisiana who have training in firearm cultural competency and improving connections and trust between firearm industry (FFLs and instructors) and

mental health providers. The second is The Armory Project, a public health collaboration with firearm retailers to promote secure firearm storage for suicide prevention.

The student worker will be responsible for assisting in identification and retention of mental health providers and firearm retailer partners, organizing and communicating about community events, developing surveys and collecting qualitative and quantitative data, and data analysis and write-up. Additional duties may include filling supply orders to community partners, contributing to development of surveys and evaluation instruments, communicating with community partners in the firearms industry and suicide prevention, coordinating and attending (if available) community events and meetings, and conducting literature reviews and other activities related to dissemination of findings. We are seeking an individual who is self-motivated, possesses strong organizational abilities, can manage multiple tasks, and adhere to deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility for a student worker position requires being enrolled at least part-time and in good standing at an accredited high school, junior college, college or university, or a vocational-technical school.
