HEOP Peer-Tutor Counselors

Summer Program: 25 hours per week for 5 weeks

Qualifications: Peer tutor-counselors are upper class students with a demonstrated capacity for academic success. They will be selected to work with HEOP based on a grade point average of 3.0 or better, demonstrated leadership abilities, and oral and written communication skills. Although peer tutor-counselor will be selected from the entire student body, preference will be given to current HEOP juniors and seniors who have already exhibited their ability to confront and overcome problems that HEOP first-year students and sophomores face.

Job Description

  • Participate in ongoing training sessions conducted by the Project Director and Assistant Director prior to the beginning of the summer program or academic year
  • Attend classes and eat lunch with HEOP students to develop trust and rapport
  • Serve as role models for HEOP students
  • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to students
  • Assist the summer program faculty in the classroom
  • Meet with faculty and HEOP professional counselors to discuss academic problems that individual students may have
  • Participate in select HEOP staff meetings
  • Provide written reports of student progress and submit these to the Associate Director
