Substation Engineer

• Design and develop high-voltage electrical substations ranging from distribution to transmission voltage levels.
• Prepare engineering calculations, plans, specifications, and design packages for substation projects.
• Develop and review physical layouts, one-line diagrams, relay and protection schematics, grounding plans, and equipment arrangements.
• Perform equipment sizing and selection for transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, bus structures, and associated substation equipment.
• Conduct power system studies, including short-circuit, load flow, grounding, and protection coordination analyses.
• Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, including IEEE, NEC, NESC, ANSI, and utility-specific requirements.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary project activities with civil, structural, protection and controls, and construction teams.
• Support procurement activities by reviewing vendor drawings, technical submittals, and equipment specifications.
• Participate in site visits, field inspections, commissioning activities, and construction support.
• Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting for operational and maintenance issues.
• Assist with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and risk management activities.
• Prepare project documentation, engineering reports, and technical presentations.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, quality, and safety.

A successful Substation Engineer should have:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• 3+ years of substation engineering experience (adjust based on role level).
• Knowledge of electrical power systems, transmission, and distribution networks.
• Experience with substation physical design and protection and control systems.
• Familiarity with applicable codes and standards such as IEEE, NEC, NESC, ANSI, and NERC where applicable.
• Proficiency with engineering and design software, including AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, CYME, or similar tools.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
