SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVER

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION The Substitute Bus Driver will be responsible for safe, efficient, smooth, and timely transportation for students. These duties will include driving the bus in a safe, resp onsible manner under the direction of the Director of Transportation. Bus routes typically run in the morning, midday, and afternoon.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION

1. Arrive prior to the scheduled departure time for any required pre-trip duties.
2. Operate the bus in a safe manner as described in your training to ensure student safety.
3. Obey all traffic laws and signals while operating t he bus and follow all county, state, and federal regulations.
4. Secure the bus when you are not behind the wheel, which includes chocking the wheels when using the lift.
5. Complete and submit all required reports in a timely and legible manner.
6. Maintain confidentiality of all student information.
7. Consistently follow the prescribed route and mainta in your schedule for the loading and unloading as required.
8. Do not deviate from the route unless traffic issues require it. No major deviation without knowledge, communication, and authorization from the Transportation Department.
9. Maintain positive behavior of students riding the b us and provide a good example through your own behavior.
10. Support schools' positive behavior initiatives by w orking with the building administration and county supervisors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

1. Twenty-one (21) years of age or older
2. Five years of driving experience with an acceptable driving record (no more than two points)
3. Valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with Scho ol Bus and Passenger endorsements, or acquire a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with Scho ol Bus and Passenger endorsements prior to employment
4. Pass a physical examination at the time of employme nt and annually prior to the beginning of the schoo l year
5. Pass all required drug and alcohol tests as required by county, state, or federal regulations

6. Pass or complete all required behind-the-wheel and classroom instruction prior to employment
7. Good character with no criminal record of violence, child abuse or neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, substance abuse, or driving under the influence
8. No sexual offenses, offenses of moral turpitude, or offenses that bear directly on the individual's fi tness to transport students

SALARY The pay rate for a Substitute Bus Driver for the 2026-2027 school year is $19.00 per hour. This position is eligible for applicable leave benefits as required by the Maryla nd Healthy Working Families Act and for participati on in the 403b/457b retirement savings plan.
