SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVER
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid NJ Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B, with passenger (P), school bus (S), and air brake endorsements.
- Must be 21 years of age with a record of safe driving experience as determined by the Board.
- Sufficient mechanical aptitude to diagnose minor problems and report mechanical issues to the Assistant Business Administrator of Operations or designee
- Ability to maintain passenger discipline to ensure their safety and well-being, and protect against vandalism
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the public.
- Required criminal history background check
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Transport pupils in a safe and efficient manner and perform all activities related to the operation of the school bus.
- Conducts a pre-trip safety inspection of the bus prior to every trip, including all interior and exterior components as well as performing an air brake test, if applicable
- Conduct a visual inspection of the school bus at the end of each transportation route to determine that no pupil has been left on the bus.
- Notify the Assistant Business Administrator of Operations or designee of any mechanical malfunctions and/or safety hazards.
- Adhere to established routes, designated bus stops and keep to assigned time schedule.
- Transport only authorized pupils and ensure that all students have left the bus at the end of the route.
- Obey all traffic laws and observe mandatory school bus safety regulations as outlined in the NJ DMV Manual.
- Report all accidents and pupil injuries immediately to the Assistant Business Administrator of Operations, principal, and Manager of Operations, and complete required reports.
- If ticketed as a result of an accident or traffic stop by police, the bus driver will pay fines and court costs, and will attend driving safety classes if so ordered by the municipal court judge.
- Will not use a cell phone while the bus is turned on or in gear, either to receive calls or to make calls. Cell phone operation in a moving vehicle is a distraction, a safety hazard, and against the law. Cell phone operation by a bus driver is only permitted if the bus is parked or at the roadside curb with the engine turned off and the bus out of gear.
- Participate in emergency evacuation drills in accordance with administrative code and board policy, and instruct passengers regarding safety regulations and other bus rules.
- Participate in the mandatory safety education program and training as part of the Driver Annual Certification process.
- Follow a flexible work schedule, including early morning and evening field trips, athletic trips, and other transportation assignments as needed.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Assistant Business Administrator of Operations and/or designee
RATE OF PAY
- $35 per hour, on an as-needed basis

Employees of the Morris School District hired after the effective date who do not reside in the State of New Jersey at the time of hire have one year from the effective date of employment to relocate their primary residence to New Jersey. Earned Sick Leave: You accrue 1 hour of earned sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours of leave per benefit year. For example, if you work 40 hours a week, you will earn 5.33 hours of earned sick leave in 4 weeks.
