Position Summary

The Substitute Cafeteria Worker provides temporary support to the school nutrition program by assisting with food preparation, meal service, cleaning, and other kitchen operations in the absence of regular cafeteria staff. The substitute works under the direction of the Food Service Director and Cafeteria Manager to ensure students receive nutritious meals in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment while following all local, state, and federal food service regulations.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation, serving, and distribution of breakfast and lunch meals.
  • Prepare food items according to standardized recipes and portion control guidelines.
  • Set up serving lines and replenish food items throughout meal service.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently following proper training.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of food preparation areas, serving lines, dining areas, equipment, and kitchen utensils.
  • Wash dishes, trays, cookware, and kitchen equipment using approved sanitation procedures.
  • Assist with receiving, storing, and rotating food and supplies using proper food safety practices.
  • Follow all local, state, federal, and district food safety and sanitation regulations, including HACCP procedures.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and district information.
  • Follow all Greenwood Community School Corporation policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, food shortages, or safety concerns to the Cafeteria Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Food Service Director or Cafeteria Manager.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous food service, restaurant, cafeteria, or customer service experience preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work collaboratively with others.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in environments with varying temperatures, including walk-in coolers, freezers, and hot kitchen areas.
  • Ability to safely operate food service equipment after appropriate training.
