Definition

The Coast Community College District IT department is looking for temporary substitute support for the following positions:

  • Position 1: Substitute-IT Business Processes Analyst
  • Position 2: Substitute-IT Technical Solutions Engineer
  • Position 3: Substitute-IT Virtualization Infrastructure & Systems Engineer

Position 1 Summary: Substitute-IT Business Processes Analyst

The Substitute-IT Business Process Analyst plans, analyzes, develops, tests, and documents computer systems and purchased integrated applications for academic and/or business purposes. Consults with staff and coordinates projects for the design and modification of best practices and automation of information flow, documents, forms, analytics, and reports.

Position 2 Summary: Substitute-IT Technical Solutions Engineer

The Substitute-IT Technical Solutions Engineer is responsible for ensuring the sustainable and reliable execution of new and existing technology platforms. The Substitute-IT Technical Solutions Engineer implements new technologies to manage device security, cloud-based services, virtual infrastructure, and applications. This position acts as a technical bridge between internal department teams and vendor partners for development, engineering, service delivery, operations, and support.

Position 3 Summary: Substitute-IT Virtualization Infrastructure & Systems Engineer

The Substitute-IT Virtualization Infrastructure & Systems Engineer provides support in the maintenance and operations of the District's VDI environment. The Substitute-IT Virtualization Infrastructure & Systems Engineer will plan, install, and configure physical servers, storage and network devices, including operating systems, software applications and tools. Recommends and implements 'best practices', as well as identifies solutions for the District's VDI environment. The Substitute-IT Virtualization Infrastructure & Systems Engineer supports virtualization projects by providing analysis, development, planning, testing and performance monitoring of complex technologies to implement and maintain the IT Virtualization plan for the College and District sites. Analyzes, tests and troubleshoots network devices and services (LAN and WAN). Documents engineering solutions and standard operating procedures.

Definition:

Under general supervisor, substitute employees perform a variety of work in support of a college or district program or office.

Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are appointed temporarilywhen recruiting to fill a permanent position or to replace classified employees who are temporarily absent from duty.

This category of employment is temporary, is not a part of the classified service, and is on an "as needed" basis, subject to termination at-will without cause and without notice by either the District or the employee. Additionally, when filling a vacancy, substitute employees may not work more than the period of time set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Position 1: Substitute-IT Business Process Analyst

  • Serves as a technology and process improvement consultant to business and academic customers. Evaluates business processes to define system requirements, propose potential solutions, and coordinate the implementation or modification of technology and/or process

automation solutions.

  • Facilitates, trains, and assists staff and other stakeholders in analyzing, improving, and implementing technology and process automation solutions. Facilitates, leads, and participates as a member of a project team.
  • Conceptualizes, analyzes, designs, and programs applications for administrative and academic users such as those for entering and integrating data from several platforms to common access by computer users.
  • Defines the scope and objectives for applications, along with constraints and system requirements. Analyzes and defines current organizational functions, processes, sources and uses of information, and other data to determine application solutions.
  • Documents workflow using organization and data flow charts and other related materials. Produces application design specifications and documentation on inputs, outputs, and data structures.
  • Identifies and documents business processes and workflow that contribute to enhanced information flow by interviewing users, generating process documentation, and proposing process solutions. Identifies information and software to support processes.
  • Troubleshoots application errors. In conjunction with users, isolates problems from symptoms, determines alternatives and develops and implements solutions. If problem is user error, works with staff to improve user instructions or train for better understanding.
  • Develops and maintains application software. Performs initial testing to application specifications using testing environments before releasing versions for use.
  • Coordinates and implements data conversions and transitions from old to new systems. Develops user and system documentation. Works with application vendors and users to facilitate data transfer and integrity.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

Position 2: Substitute-IT Technical Solutions Engineer

The IT Technical Solutions Engineer is responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks for Infrastructure and Operations relating to Device Management, Server Management & Migration, Data Center Operations, and Cloud Environments.

  • Engineering and operational responsibility for the hardware, software, and systems managed by the Information Technology Services team, which includes operating systems, email, anti-virus, Active Directory, M365 cloud services, and backup/recovery solutions.
  • Design, develop and engineer technical solutions to facilitate new device platform implementations, device roll outs, system updates, and version migrations.
  • Builds, scales, and secures our on-premises and cloud services using automation tools such as Azure ARC, Alerts, PowerShell, and Monitor.
  • Works as a subject matter expert in the following key areas: Office 365/Azure, Active Directory, Exchange/Exchange Online, Power Platform Governance, VMware products.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and communicates architecture and integration options; makes recommendations to management and documents best practices.
  • Provides solutions and inputs into the design of configuration data required to manage and track end point devices, infrastructure and applications effectively; analyzes current technologies and develops steps and processes to improve and/or adapt for future needs.
  • Responsible for the technical management of software, updates, and tools that continually improve performance and resolve persistent issues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

Position 3: Substitute-IT Virtualization Infrastructure & Systems Engineer

Data Center & Servers & Virtualization & Storage

  • Installs and configures physical servers, storage and network devices, including operating systems, software applications and tools.
  • Provides day-to-day operational support for the physical data link, and network layers of the District's physical and virtualized environments.
  • Designs, builds, operates, and maintains on-premise and cloud virtual server and desktop infrastructure in accordance with the District's virtualization plan and recommended best practices.
  • Installs, configures, modifies, maintains and repairs virtual systems, servers and network equipment, hardware, operating systems, software and applications. Maintains system integrity.
  • Sets up new physical and virtual servers to enhance capacity of network function for communication on the network.

Security & Compliance & Documentation

  • Documents engineering solutions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure services are delivered in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ensures policies, procedures, rules and regulations are being met and followed according to College and District standard practices.
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date documentation supporting assigned and related areas of responsibility.
  • Develops and maintains up-to-date documentation for network infrastructure, servers, and procedures. Conveys information to co-workers as appropriate regarding network and server interface protocols.

Management & Monitoring & Troubleshooting & Systems Center

  • Analyzes reports from monitoring tools to be proactive in resource usage in order to recommend future growth paths and technologies.
  • Analyzes, tests and troubleshoots network devices and services, asset management, and utilization of the network management tools; monitors and analyzes network performance of the District's infrastructure and internet protocols.
  • Schedules system downtime with end users and technical staff members to facilitate hardware and software upgrades, changeovers, and backups.

Architecture & Design & Project Management

  • Researches, develops, and recommends solutions to current organizational challenges as it relates to virtualized infrastructures.
  • Assists with technical roadmaps for future virtual infrastructure implementation, growth, software upgrades and defines requirements.
  • Works closely with infrastructure, user support, faculty and staff to ensure implementation meets design and requirements.

Position 1: Substitute-IT Business Processes Analyst

Education and Experience: The position requires a Bachelor's Degree in business, computer science or related discipline, plus three years of progressive experience in process improvement and/or applications development and support. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position. A Master's degree is preferred and may substitute for some experience. The education and experience will vary depending on the nature of the assignment.

Licenses and Certificates: May require a valid driver license.

Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

Position 2: Substitute-IT Technical Solutions Engineer

Education and Experience: The position typically requires a bachelors degree in information technology, information systems, computer science, or related field required, and six years of industry experience. (Industry experience includes, but is not limited to application, infrastructure, database, and networking architecture; large scale production Windows environments; Active Director, GPO, DNS, Clustering, and Windows Server (Server Core, 2012/2016/2019); Cloud environment design and support) Additional higher education and/or industry certifications may substitute for some experience. Or, any combination of education and experience which would meet the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Licenses and Certificates:

  • May require a valid driver license.
  • Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (Required).
  • Microsoft Azure Administrator (Recommended).
  • Microsoft Azure Security Engineer (Recommended).
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) (Recommended).

Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor, positioning in cramped areas, and handling of medium weight, yet, awkward materials.

Position 3: Substitute-IT Virtualization Infrastructure & Systems Engineer

Education and Experience: The position requires a Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or a related discipline and six years of related experience in virtualization technologies. Alternatively, the position may accept an Associate's degree and 10 years of progressive virtualization experience. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Required Training/Cert: VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • Preferred Training/Cert:VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)
  • May require certification and a valid driver license.

Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor, positioning in cramped areas, and handling of medium weight, yet, awkward materials.

Conditions of Employment

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Duration of Assignment: 130 days or less
  • Hours per week: 40 hours /week
  • Onsite/Remote: Hybrid (1 potential remote day per week)
  • Pay: Classified Substitute ES-125 $52.46 /hour

This category of employment is temporary, is not a part of the classified service, and is on an "as needed" basis, subject to termination at-will without cause and without notice by either the District or the employee. Additionally, when filling a vacancy, substitute employees may not work more than the period of time set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

  • Retired CalPERS Annuitants: may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30)*

Employment is contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

  • Job offers are conditional and are contingent upon the successful completion of satisfactory comprehensive background check (including Livescan fingerprinting) and satisfactory references, and approval or ratification by the District's Board of Trustees or the Chancellor.

  • Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

  • The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. These are typically onsite. Typical hours are 8 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday. This assignment is anticipated to begin in September and may run through March (or earlier, depending on the needs of the department). ES-125 Per ES Classified Substitute Salary Schedule.
