We encourage all interested applicants to apply.Position Purpose:The Substitute School Nurse provides assessment, screening, intervention, nursing care, health education, counseling, and referrals to address the health and medical needs of students. The nurse works to minimize absences due to illness or injury, support students' health and well-being, and maximize their ability to participate safely and successfully in the educational environment.Essential Functions:Provide nursing assessment, first aid, and appropriate care to students who are ill or injured.Implement individualized health care plans and provide nursing interventions based on students' specific health needs.Monitor and evaluate student health needs and modify care as appropriate.Collaborate with students, parents/guardians, health care providers, teachers, administrators, and community agencies to ensure continuity of care.Maintain accurate and confidential health records and documentation in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and district policies.Conduct or assist with health screenings, immunization programs, physical examinations, and vision and hearing testing.Monitor compliance with state immunization requirements and Board of Education policies.Implement district procedures regarding the exclusion and readmission of students with infectious or communicable diseases.Provide health education, guidance, and counseling to students, parents/guardians, and staff as appropriate.Participate as a health professional on school-based teams, including Crisis Teams, PPT, and Section 504 meetings, as designated.Communicate with parents/guardians, physicians, clinics, school personnel, and other professionals regarding student health needs.Provide or assist with staff training related to student health and safety, including CPR, blood-borne pathogens, emergency procedures, and care of students with disabilities.Provide medical assessment to school district employees when requested.Respond appropriately to student injuries and illnesses and notify parents/guardians and appropriate personnel or agencies in accordance with district policy.Use appropriate medical equipment and technology in providing care.Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications:Must meet the qualifications for a school nurse under applicable New York State regulations.Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse (R.N.) license required.Current CPR certification required.Experience working with children or adolescents, preferably in a school, community, or pediatric setting, desirable.Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.Ability to work effectively with students, families, teachers, administrators, health care providers, and other professionals.Ability to provide care for students with diverse health needs and disabilities.Knowledge of nursing practices, medical terminology, anatomy, first aid, common illnesses and injuries, and health education.Proficiency with computers and common software applications. Work Environment:The Substitute School Nurse may be assigned to schools across the district and should be prepared to provide coverage at different grade levels. The position involves working in a school environment and may include exposure to illness, blood-borne pathogens, body secretions, medications, and medical supplies. Travel between district schools may be required.
