SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

Job Summary: The Substitute Teacher will assist with maintaining educational continuity when regular teachers are absent. They execute pre-written lesson plans, manage classroom behavior, enforce school safety policies, and provide end-of-day reports. This role requires high adaptability, strong classroom management skills, and a commitment to providing a positive learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • NYS Teacher Certification preferred

Primary Activities

  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Reports to the building principal or school secretary upon arrival at the school.
  • Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which they are assigned.
  • Teaches lesson plans as outlined by the absent teacher.
  • Performs extra duties for the absent teacher as required by the building principal.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation, pertaining to teachers and students.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Remains at school during the entire school day unless excused by the principal or the designated representative.
  • Maintains a professional appearance as an example for students.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and incorporates technology in daily tasks, as required.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • Lesson Delivery: Execute daily lesson plans left by the regular teacher to maintain a consistent learning experience.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain discipline, establish order, and foster a welcoming, safe, and productive environment.
  • Student Supervision: Monitor students in and out of the classroom, including hallways, cafeterias, and playgrounds.
  • Record Keeping: Take attendance, record lesson-plan progress, and report any notable incidents or positive developments to the permanent teacher.
  • Support Individual Needs: Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse student learning styles and any specific Individualized Education Program (IEP) guidelines.

Salary Range

$130/diem with valid NYS Teacher Certification; $120/diem without valid NYS Teacher Certification (based on 2025/2026 salary schedule, 2026/2027 TBD)
