Position Overview Ford Motor Company is seeking an experienced chemist, chemical or materials engineer, or materials scientist to lead two distinct teams: the Chemistry Laboratory and Material Compliance. This role offers the opportunity to develop employees, strengthen technical capabilities, and shape how chemistry testing and material compliance support Ford's Product Development, Manufacturing, and Research & Engineering organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and develop two teams
- Supervise, coach, and develop experienced chemists and material compliance engineers.
- Set priorities and coordinate resources across the Chemistry Laboratory and Material Compliance teams.
- Build a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing work environment.
- Support employees' professional growth and help ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Chemistry Laboratory
- Oversee laboratory analysis of automotive fluids and lubricants; vehicle tailpipe and interior emissions; and battery-electric-vehicle electrolytes, sealers, resins, and polymers.
- Guide testing that supports materials development, failure investigations, and unknown-material analysis.
- Review laboratory reports and help improve the quality, consistency, and usefulness of testing and results.
- Serve as a technical resource on chemistry, analytical methods, and laboratory issues.
- Recommend and implement improvements to laboratory instrumentation, methods, and operations.
Material Compliance
- Lead the interpretation, communication, and implementation of corporate material and substance requirements.
- Work with global suppliers and Ford engineers, functions, and vehicle programs on applicable requirements, including the Restricted Substances Management Standard (RSMS), End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) requirements, REACH, EPA/TSCA, conflict minerals, and transportation regulations.
- Oversee regulatory compliance reporting and analysis using Ford's Global Material Management tools and the International Materials Data System (IMDS).
- Facilitate and participate in compliance reviews, issue-resolution discussions, and vehicle program meetings.
- Ensure required government material-compliance documentation is completed for recycling, recoverables, and renewables (RRR) requirements for vehicle programs in Europe, China, and South Korea.
- Maintain Ford's corporate RSMS restricted-substance lists and lead the maintenance and improvement of related Global Material Management tools and systems.
Section operations and administration
- Oversee laboratory housekeeping, safety, environmental practices, chemical inventory, and hazardous-waste disposal in accordance with Ford policies and procedures.
- Lead section administration and operations, including capital projects, operating metrics, efficiency improvements, employee development, and budget planning and delivery.
- Understand and administer the applicable UAW-Ford agreement for employees represented by the UAW.
- Balance competing priorities and address complex technical and operational issues across both teams.
