• Orthopaedic surgery experience strongly preferred

• Preparing and maintaining sterile fields, instruments, and surgical equipment
• Assisting surgeons and the surgical team during orthopaedic procedures

• Supporting patient safety through meticulous counting and sterile technique practices

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate Surgical Technologist career ladder level and salary range based on individual education, certification, and experience.

Pennsylvania House Bill 81 (Enacted 10/29/2020; Effective 12/27/2020

• Two years of current Surgical Technologist experience demonstrating advanced knowledge in at least two surgical specialties. Surgical specialties include, but are not limited to: General, Orthopedic, Vascular, Plastic and Reconstructive, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Thoracic, Ophthalmic, Neurosurgery, Organ Procurement, Endoscopic Surgical Settings

• Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

In addition to the required experience, candidates must meet one of the following:

• Completed a program sponsored by a nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation organization and maintain certification
• Completed an appropriate military training program
• Maintain certification from an accredited program
• Were employed as a Surgical Technologist in a healthcare facility on or before December 27, 2020
• Were employed as a Surgical Technologist at another healthcare facility for two years before December 27, 2020

Exception: A healthcare facility may employ individuals who do not meet the certification requirements if, after a diligent and thorough effort, it is unable to employ a sufficient number of qualified Surgical Technologists who meet the requirements. Written records of recruitment efforts must be maintained. Recruitment efforts are documented and can be supplied upon request. The supply of certified or certification-eligible Surgical Technologists does not meet organizational needs.

Continuing Education Requirements

• Certified individuals must comply with continuing education requirements established by their credentialing organization.
• Non-certified individuals must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

• Basic Life Support (BLS or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR certification required based on AHA standards, including both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC
• Act 34 Clearance

Certification Details

• Staff employed as Surgical Technologists on or before December 27, 2020, or employed as Surgical Technologists at another healthcare facility for two years prior to December 27, 2020, are grandfathered and not required to obtain certification.
• The certification exception described above may apply when sufficient qualified candidates are unavailable despite documented recruitment efforts.
