Swim Coach (Pre-Competitive Program)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Swim Club Coach at the YMCA of Greenwich will lead a mixed pre-competitive and recreational swim group, focusing on stroke development, water confidence, and enjoyment of the sport. This role emphasizes physical and cognitive coaching, athlete development, and building a positive team culture for intermediate swimmers hoping to pursue competitive swimming.

Director of Aquatic Programs & Development

PAY RANGE:

$25/hour – $40/hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Coach swimmers ages 7-14 with a focus on stroke technique and skill progression
• Plan and lead structured swim practices for youth athletes
• Deliver technique-focused coaching while maintaining a recreational environment
• Provide individualized coaching feedback to support swimmer development
• Build a positive, motivating team culture that encourages growth and retention
• Communicate with parents regarding swimmer progress and coaching goals
• Ensure safety standards are upheld during all practices
• Collaborate with aquatics leadership on program growth and coaching strategy

SCHEDULE & COMMITMENT

• Practices held three times per week (8 hours per week): Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 5-7pm
• Practice Season: September through June
• Additional hours available to teach private or group lessons

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prior swim coaching experience (youth, club, or pre-competitive preferred)
• Strong background in stroke technique and swimmer development
• Ability to balance technique-driven coaching with a fun, athlete-centered approach
• Excellent communication and leadership skills
• CPR/AED, First Aid, and/or Lifeguard certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Certified USA Swim Coach (or willingness to obtain)
• Must be 16 years of age or older
• Passion for coaching and youth development

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Indoor pool facility: this environment is characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity levels.
• The atmosphere can be loud and busy with multiple classes or swim sessions occurring simultaneously.
• Candidates will interact with a diverse group of participants, including children, adults and individuals with special needs, requiring a friendly, patient and professional demeanor.
• The role requires an adherence to safety and hygiene protocols, as well as the ability to maintain a clean and organized pool area.
• The swim coach position requires a high level of fitness and endurance
• The role involves frequent bending, reaching, lifting and moving of equipment as much as 10lbs, as well as the ability to support swimmers of various sizes.
• Strong verbal communication skills are essential to effectively instruct and ensure the safety of all participants.
