Job Title Swim Instructor - 2026-2027 Academic Year Department Athletics Job Description/Duties
Swim instructors will teach water safety and aquatic skills to participants across two campus pools. Preference is given to candidates with current certification in swim instruction (i.e., American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor), previous certification (expired), and experienced water safety/swim instructors. Orientation and in-service training are required at least once a semester, more if deemed necessary by a supervisor. Instructors may be assigned to either pool based on availability and program needs.
Days/Hours Needed
Instruction is organized into program sessions of four to five weeks, meeting two to three days per week. Each instructional day consists of a continuous two- to three-hour block of lessons.
Shift assignments are given in the following order:
Lesson assignments are issued at the start of each program session and may vary from session to session based on enrollment and staffing needs.
Classes do not take place during school breaks/holidays.

Park Center Holsten pool, Student Life Center pool
Required Qualifications
Must be a current SUNY Cortland student. Ability to demonstrate front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke.
Preferred Qualifications
Current or previous certification as a water safety/swim instructor. Previous experience as a water safety/swim instructor.
Physical Demands
Ability to demonstrate front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke. Can spend up to 50 minutes in a pool.
