    Job Description

AWS Security is looking for a Systems Development Manager to lead a team of systems development engineers who run the infrastructure and automation behind security tooling for a U.S. Government program in a classified environment. Your team will keep these systems secure, available, and scalable, and will automate operations so the security organization can move faster.

You will own your team"s infrastructure and operations roadmap, including infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, monitoring, and system health. You"ll work with software development, security engineering, program management, and Government counterparts to set priorities and deliver results. You will hire and develop strong engineers and build a culture of ownership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

This position requires that the candidate selected be a US Citizen and must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead, hire, and develop a team of systems development engineers, and set clear goals and performance expectations.
    • Own the infrastructure and operations roadmap for security tooling, from design through deployment and sustainment.
    • Drive automation of infrastructure as code, configuration management, and deployment to reduce manual operational work.
    • Set operational excellence standards, including availability and health metrics, monitoring, alerting, and on-call health.
    • Partner with software development, security engineering, TPM, and Government stakeholders to prioritize work and remove blockers.
    • Report operational performance, risks, and results clearly to senior leadership.

    A day in the life

You start by reviewing overnight availability and health metrics with your team, then help an engineer through an infrastructure issue that"s blocking a deployment. Mid-morning, you lead a design review for an automation change that will remove a manual maintenance task, and push the team to make it simpler and more reliable. You meet with the software development manager to line up infrastructure work with upcoming tooling releases. In the afternoon, you coach an engineer one-on-one, interview a candidate, and brief leadership on operational risk. Your team keeps critical security systems running on a classified program.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here
