POSITION: TEACHING ASSISTANT

SALARY: $23.57 - 25.14 per hour + Benefits

$35,355 - 38, 910 Annual Salary

These Intensive Needs positions require specialized skills and training. As such, the salary schedule for Intensive Needs positions shall be Four Hundred Dollars ($400) above the regular salary schedule

QUALIFICATIONS: Any person employed as a teacher assistant, must hold one of the following credentials: temporary license, continuing certificate, or Level I, II, III or Para-Professional certificate. Since February 2, 2004, all teacher assistant candidates are required to take the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills Tests (ATAS) unless the candidate took and achieved a qualifying score on the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) which is a requirement for classroom teacher certification. DUTIES: The role of teacher assistant is to provide direct instructional services to the students under the supervision of the principal and the direction of certified teachers who are responsible for the students' instruction.

  • Working with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects*
  • Providing the teacher with information about pupils that will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences*
  • Assisting pupils in the use of available instructional resources, and assisting in the development of appropriate learning experiences*
  • Utilizing their own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs in areas such as: foreign language, arts, crafts, music and similar projects*
  • Communicating effectively with the instructional team, including the classroom teacher, other professional staff and parents
  • Attending to the physical needs of the students, as appropriate
  • Assisting in related institutional work as required
  • New York State Commissioner Regulations, Section 80-5.6(b)

Appointed Teaching Assistants for the Intensive Needs Program will remain in place for a minimum of THREE (3) YEARS.

Appointed Staff will be required to participate in training in July and/ or August at the contractual rate of pay.

APPOINTMENT: Appointments are subject to the review of the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent. Personal interviews shall be scheduled where appropriate
