The primary mission of the College of Visual and Performing Arts is to provide the highest quality, comprehensive training in performance, education, and the historical and theoretical aspects of Art, Arts Administration, Dance, Music, and Theatre. The College is comprised of the School of Art, School of Dance, School of Music, School of Theatre, and the Arts Administration program. The College of Visual and Performing Arts has approximately 1,703 students and 135+ full/part-time faculty and staff.

Position Summary

The UNCG School of Dance seeks a Dance Technical Coordinator for a full-time (100%) 9 month- appointment to oversee all production aspects for the school. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the technical and artistic aspects of lighting and production for dance and possess strong artistic collaboration skills. Primary duties will include designing lights for faculty and student choreographic works, instructing undergraduate and graduate Dance Production courses, and managing undergraduate student stage crew practicums.

Within the context of UNCG's comprehensive liberal arts curriculum, the UNCG School of Dance offers bachelor's and master's degrees that provide specialized skills for a variety of careers in the developing field of dance. Within the UNC System, the UNCG School of Dance is positioned as the training ground for the thinking dancer, who values the rigors of both praxis and scholarship and celebrates a variety of approaches to dancing, dance making, and dance as a way of knowing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree and two years of professional production experience. All degrees received must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Working experience instructing post-secondary or college-level students.
  • Experience with production organization and management, including scheduling student labor and prioritizing work for multiple projects.
  • Operating and maintaining stage lighting and lighting systems.
  • Operating and maintaining stage sound and sound systems.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

  • Supporting new media technology for dance.
  • Supporting Dance performance in non-traditional settings.
  • MA or MFA degrees in Theater Production and Lighting Design
  • Evidence of employing technical, artistic, and pedagogical practices that support equitable, diverse, and inclusive learning environments.

  • Trains and supervises student technicians, lighting designers, sound designers, and stage managers.

Essential Tasks

  • Design lighting for Dance productions.
  • Ability to utilize current software packages on Apple and PC computers for lighting design for dance and to use standard features, including CADD software (i.e., Vector works, Spotlight, Microlux, or equivalent).

Production Equipment management and Safety Officer

Essential Tasks

  • Ability to effectively use the following: counterweight rigging system, computerized lighting control system, electric personnel lift, theatrical lighting equipment, theatrical special effects equipment, and industrial power tools.
  • Orders and maintains production equipment.
  • Maintain the production budget for scenic, lighting, and sound equipment.
  • Serve as safety officer for the School of Dance (compliance with safe practices and workplace regulations).
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and workplace regulations.
  • Oversee safe use of equipment and spaces.
  • Monitor and maintain dance studio flooring and sound systems.
