    Position Summary

    The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground telecommunications conduit, fiber optic cable pathways, and other utility infrastructure. This role requires experience operating drilling equipment, understanding underground utility safety practices, and working closely with crew members to ensure safe and accurate installations.

    The ideal candidate is a skilled operator with a strong focus on safety, precision, and teamwork in a fast-paced construction environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment to install conduit and utilities.
    • Interpret bore plans, utility locates, and construction drawings.
    • Perform pre-trip equipment inspections and routine maintenance.
    • Safely navigate drilling equipment while avoiding existing underground utilities.
    • Monitor drilling fluid systems and maintain appropriate drilling conditions.
    • Work with locators and crew members to guide drill head and maintain proper bore path.
    • Install conduit, pullback fiber ducts, and other underground infrastructure.
    • Maintain accurate drilling logs and job documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and company safety policies.
    • Assist with jobsite setup, traffic control, and restoration activities when required.

    Required Qualifications

    • Minimum 2+ years experience operating horizontal directional drilling equipment
    • CDL is Required
    • Experience installing fiber optic conduit or utility infrastructure
    • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and bore profiles
    • Knowledge of underground utility locating and safety practices
    • Strong mechanical aptitude and equipment troubleshooting ability
    • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
    • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physical construction work
    • Valid driver's license required

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in telecommunications fiber construction
    • CDL (Commercial Driver's License) preferred
    • Experience with Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar HDD equipment
    • Knowledge of fiber optic installation practices
    • Experience working in OSP utility environments

    Work Environment

    • Outdoor construction environments
    • Exposure to varying weather conditions
    • Physical labor including lifting, bending, and kneeling
    • Work near heavy equipment and active construction sites

    Travel

    Travel may be required depending on project location.

    Compensation

    Competitive wage depending on experience (DOE).
